I've felt like crap all day--headache from hell, puking, just miserable.
I think it was caffeine withdrawal. I realized this evening that I hadn't had any caffeine since Friday. Not a planned thing. I usually have iced tea or coke at lunch, just for the purpose of fending off this kind of thing. Well, Friday I had lunch with two parishioners at a Mexican restaurant, accompanied with a lime Jarrito. Saturday, I spent part of the day with my ex (yeah, we've learned we can be friends, if not spouses) at a local festival. I had a nutritious lunch of a funnel cake, popcorn and beer. Sunday, i ate at the free community lunch at the Episcopal Church two doors from my church, with lemonade.

By late morning today, I had a headache that would knock down an elephant. By lunch time I was so nauseous I couldn't eat. And my mid-afternoon, I was puking in spite of having nothing in my stomach. I found myself thinking, "Well, it feels like a caffeine headache, but I haven't had one in years." Then I realized...and yes, made myself a cup of tea. It took all evening, and finally getting some food in my tummy, but I'm finally feeling better.

I'm powerless over caffeine, and I don't give a damn. Make me some tea!!

Critters
just wasted her day off

9. The only caffeine I had in the house was tea bags, and I wanted it in my system FAST!
I could've heated it, then iced it, but that would've taken more time than I wanted. So, in the midst of an extreme heat warning, I was sipping hot tea. Any port in a storm!

12. No, just regular Equal Exchange black tea. I have some lemon tea, but it's decaf.
Not what I needed tonight.

4. I am feeling okay now. Won't feel like sleeping, probably, since I had that tea so late.
But I'll live with that. I'm gonna try to go to bed soon.

It is amazing how bad I felt. I've tried to go off caffeine in the past, and finally gave up. Now I remember why.

Thanks for the , Peg!

7. Thanks, Connonym. I stopped trying to get off the stuff years ago.
I really only drink it to avoid these symptoms. So, this was an important reminder. I'm addicted, and that's just the way it is.

Thanks for the good wishes. Have a good night! :hi:

3. I'm sorry to hear you aren't feeling well
And caffeine withdrawal is a bitch. I've been able to cut out caffeine enough now that I can have it occasionally without getting re-addicted.
And Critters..I don't know if this makes you feel any better or not..but killer headaches and puking ones guts out..Thats sadly a common occurence in my life now....I even work a lot experiencing one or more of those symptoms...Being chronically ill sucks..

6. I didn't realize you lived with these symptoms chronically.
I'm sorry to hear. I can't imagine feeling this way as a common occurrence. That does suck. Puts my one crappy day in perspective.

So sorry, turtlensue!

8. You should talk with your doctor about that...
I can understand the caffeine making you feel better, but not the severity of your symptoms. I can't help thinking there's more to it than caffeine withdrawal.

Hope you're much better tomorrow!

10. Actually, when I was doing my chaplaincy internship, I had these symptoms.
I did my clinical at a Seventh-Day Adventist hospital, which meant there was no caffeine served in the cafeteria, vending machines, anywhere. I started having symptoms like this b mid-afternoon every day. One of the nurses on the oncology unit where I was working asked me if I usually drank caffeine. I said I drank both tea and coke quite a lot. She and a doctor at the station both suggested I bring a tea bag of can of pop with caffeine for lunch the next day. I did, and felt fine that afternoon. I mentioned this to the doctor, and he said I was addicted. He made some suggestions for easing off, but I was worried about the quality of my work (and grade) suffering. So, I thanked him kindly, and brought tea bags to work every day.

15. I can't help wondering if it isn't a more serious problem (neurological?)
that the caffeine alleviates.

17. That's consistent with caffeine withdrawal in my experience
The husband has threatened to take me to ER for it before. (I think I responded by mumbling and staring blankly at the wall while shaking, between bouts of hurling into the toilet)

14. Are you drinking enough water?...
...headaches can also be a sign of dehydration. Especially if you are drinking alcohol.

And "funnel cake, popcorn and beer", sounds like a recipe for a headache. Just sayin'...:-)

16. There's also a virus going around.
A few days back I was having bad headaches and slept 20 to 30 hours at a time! I just figured it was another bout of depression, and didn't understand why.

I don't know WHY it always takes hindsight for me to figure this out. You'd think I'd know this by now. When I get sick, my normal reaction is to sleep a lot. Duh!

I saw a Dr today for an unrelated reason, and he discovered I was a bit feverish. My chest really hurts now, and he listened to my lungs and felt I'd had a virus, that he'd just got over himself.

Well duh! It never occurred to me that I was actually sick and running a fever.

19. Yes, I fought something off over the weekend
I felt as if I was about to have the flu, but I slept and took a lot of vitamins and never actually got sick.

Critters, considering all the places you ate, is it possible that you got a touch of food poisoning?

I've had caffeine withdrawal, but never anything like that. Between my freshman and sophomore years of college, I worked on the phone lines for catalogue sales at a Sears store, and I survived by drinking gallons of coffee. Okay, not gallons, but coffee for breakfast, coffee for my two breaks, and coffee at lunch.

However, when I returned to college, I found that they had hired a new food service contractor, someone who for some reason was incapable of producing drinkable coffee. It was the foulest stuff I had ever tasted, and that was before the days of gourmet coffee, so you know it was seriously bad. So I quit cold turkey. Within a day, I had splitting headaches and trouble staying awake.

Since drinking college coffee was out of the question, I bought a little hot pot, a jar of Taster's Choice, and some Solo cups. Problem solved. The fact that Taster's Choice tasted heavenly in comparison to the college coffee should give you a clue as to how bad it was.
