I think people are seeing what they want to see in this. If this was a Willie Nelson Solo would the same people who now claim Keith's racist intent be defending Nelson?

The song is ignorant, but to claim it's racist or about lynching is even more ignorant. But there are DU buttons that when pushed can't be unpushed. You just let them babble and feel all superior and all, and know that at least they'll vote the right way in November.

of opinion. Jackson (in my opinion) is a decent human being with a great musical talent who writes a lot of his own work. Keith is caca (in my opinion) in all ways.

The song is still an embarrassment to country music and the world, but there is more to it than meets the eye. To me it's an embarrassment more because it's a lousy song than because of the attitude it represents. Art is meant to portray an attitude or a fragment of reality, not necessarily to promote a point of view. Like "Okie from Muskogee." Merle Haggard wrote that song about his father, too, as his father saw the world. It wasn't meant to be a political statement, but most audiences weren't sophisticated enough to grasp that. Later, Haggard even claimed the song was satire.

Keith has some decent stuff. He's an Outlaw wannabee whose songwriting is better than the average country writer, but not often up there with the best. He at least has a sense of musicality, whereas so much of country music sounds like some drunken rant sung to a pathetically simple melody made up on the spot. And he has a sense of humor. His song "I ain't as good as I once was" is clever, though not brilliant. He's got several like that.

As for Alan Jackson, he's got a good musical sense, too. He writes some, but not many of his songs. I like the way he sings--kind of a cross between Don Williams and George Strait, never really reaching beyond what his voice can handle, but not sounding bored with his work, either (as George Strait often does). He sticks with simple, but he's not really. He recorded the song "Gone Country" when country was making a comeback in the 90s, then "Murder on Music Row" when country music started going pop in the 2000s. I like his musical integrity.

good stuff for me. His latest CD "Good Times" is as good, if not better then his earlier works. He surely makes it look and sound easy.

My favorite Toby Keith work was Blue Moon. I was on deployment in Saudi Arabia in 96 when that song came out and we had a Blue Moon in June. So it has some sentimental value to my wife and me.

I'm all for hollywood types or recording artists to exercise their constitutional liberties, just as long as they don't mind if I do.

I will say I think his more-jingoistic tunes are, well, stupid. And his other stuff's pretty hit or miss, but the previously mentioned song is kick ass, and he's got a couple other pretty solid ones, like "Beer for My Horses" and "I Love This Bar."
