1. Hug, Handshake or High Five
Best solution I've seen yet was the Kindergarten teacher. "You did a great job. Do you choose a hug, high five or handshake?" The kids loved it. I think the kid being able to choose made all the difference to them.

2. It's generally the students who initiate the hugs!
When they do that, I just give a little light pat on the back of the shoulder. I don't give them a big hug back. I'm talking about little kids, like K-3.

Some middle schoolers like to hug too... but I can usually fend them off with a high-5. Maybe I'll try fist bumps this year! LOL

We are told to never touch a child, but you have to use common sense. The little ones are just happy and excited and you don't want to make them feel like that is wrong, but you can't encourage it either.

3. Yup. As a matter of fact when I volunteer
as soon as I walk in the door I get mobbed by the kids. Kids are a very good judge of character it seems. :P

Seriously, it might just be that they know I am happy to be there helping them.

5. As long as the kid wants the hug...
I don't see why not...unless it's an effort on the part of the teacher or the student to seduce the other.

6. It's my prediction by 2015 all physical contact will be illegal.

Including contact with your spouse, or should I say especially.

7. I doubt that...
There have been too many studies that prove that touch is healthy...and that lack of touch is unhealthy.

9. If I was a teacher
I would be leary to hug another child. Especially if you are a man and the child is a female. I'm sorry but we live in SUE HAPPY USA and some parent will always be waiting to take advantage of an innocent hug.

10. I'll say yes with a qualifier.
I have a 12yr old girl going into 7th grade. I don't think her male teachers need to be standing at the door waiting to hug their female students as they come into class. Get my drift? OTOH, when it's appropriate, I don't have a problem.
