Boston Braves' pitcher Charlie "Red" Barrett throws only 58 pitches to beat Cincinnati 2-0 in a game that lasts an hour and 15 minutes.
1889 — New York Giants pitcher and future Hall of Famer (307 wins) Mickey Welch is the first pinch-hitter in major-league history in a 9-6 win over the Indianapolis Hoosiers. Welch didn't help the Giants any, though, as he struck out.
1989 — San Francisco Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky makes his first start after a 15-month recovery from cancer surgery on his pitching arm and one-hits Cincinnati over seven innings at Candlestick Park in one of the most emotional games in history.
Five days later, Dravecky's humerus snapped as he pitched to Montreal's Tim Raines in the sixth inning. While it was healing, the Giants won the National League pennant, and in their celebration it was broken again. A doctor later saw a mass on the bone in X-rays, and Dravecky's arm was amputated less than two years later.
Here's one for Kitchy:
1971 — Harmon Killebrew becomes the 10th player to hit 500 homers when he takes Baltimore's Mike Cuellar out of the Met yard in the first inning. Killebrew hit no. 501 in the sixth, also off Cuellar.
But the O's won 4-3 with a run in the ninth off reliever Ray Corbin.
