The silver and bronze medalists for the 10m air pistol women's final pose for pictures on the podium in the Beijing Shooting Range Hall, Beijing, China, 10 August, 2008.

From left:
Natalia Paderina of Russia
Nino Salukvadze of Georgia

(Not pictured: gold medalist Guo Wenjun of China)


In case the meaning is too subtle for some folks: one woman is from Russia, the other from Georgia and they are celebrating peacefully even as their "respective" governments shoot to kill people back home.

and this to the altar of the almighty physically adept



and a way to be nationalistic and warlike without the messiness of actual blood and in a nicely pretend environment that "we're all just here to play well together and do the best we can".
