I might be able to swing a little time; my oldest friend in the world lives in Houston and has been trying to get me to come down and see her .

Funny she was never my BEST friend but she was always my friend, our moms had pictures of us together on blankets when we were babies; I think I am 5 months older?

I have a few of those scattered around the country. One from elementary school. a couple from college, some from my caving days.


I digress. Give me your dates, etc and we can work from there. Even if we meet in Austin or some other half way point for a day...and I know there are other DU folks down there, and lots of them up here.

If you can get up here, we would have to have a long overdue meetup.

If you are taking I-30 through Arkansas you pretty much have to come through here.

Heading north from Houston, you hit Dallas, then head east to Texarkana, Little Rock where you hit I40, then that takes you to Nashville where you hit I65 which takes you Indy, where you can get the interstates into Michigan. Or to Louisville where you hit another set of stuff that can take you into Michigan.

SO. There is no reason I couldn't meet you when you are coming through Dallas....at least have lunch because you will be ready for lunch by then coming up from Houston. I think it is 4 hours from H to D, we have to add another hour to get over to I-45 from here.

I think this may be where we start using PM so the rest of the board isn't bored with all this!

I don't leave until MOnday the 18th.

edit: yes, you need to come sailing with me. I do wish we had a slightly larger lake close by. on a related note, I am closer to having my own tow vehicle which will open up more possibilities for lakes... :bounce:

Couldn't agree with you more. These popularity contest threads are the worst. I think many people don't realize how hurt and excluded some people can feel because of them

I remember six years ago when I first came on here there was one of these popularity contests and everyone posted their lists as they were doing now (including me I'm ashamed to say) and then one poster who was then a semi-regular began to feel hurt and excluded. He had actually gone to an anti-Bush rally and had been tear-gassed and beaten and he was depressed and in great discomfort and no-one had included him on their list. That thread has remained with me and I've always been very, very uncomfortable with these types of threads since then

Being relatively new to the Lounge though, I see it as a way to become more familiar with people who I might not have seen too many posts from, as seen through the filter of someone who I have. Not to say that I would pigeon hole them, just that it gives me a little bit of a reference point into what they may find funny or interesting. Just my take on it.

There are people on this thread who I've never heard of before, and there are some who may not be "liked" by everyone. My point was that these types of exercises can give one a glimpse of who is attracted or gravitates toward who, and by applying the known qualities of one individual, one can have a base to begin interaction with one whose qualities are not known.

I do consider the point valid though, that these things can be a little clique like, but that's kinda how it is IRL too isn't it?
