I just overheard something weird about the Olympics here at work.
Some of my co-workers were saying that much of the opening ceremonies (fireworks, some little girl singing, etc.) were actualy CG. Anyone else heard anything like this?

1. Not CG, but a story came out today that the little girl singing...
was actually lip syncing, because they got a cuter girl to do the stage stuff.

So, yeah, it was fake, but not in the way your coworkers are suggesting.

7. I think all singing is lip synched at the Olympics
Bjork was forced to lip synch although she never does it.

8. Even if that's the case, it's kinda different here...
because not only is it lip syncing, it's replacing the actual singer with a cuter person and passing them off as the singer.

3. I read somewhere that the fireworks were CG'd, and the little girl
who was singing wasn't the little girl that was shown. Total sham. The little girl who was singing apparently wasn't 'pretty' enough. :puke:

17. Perhaps they wanted to go with Milli Vanilli instead since they are much better looking

4. Well some of the fireworks were. And the little girl who sang
their national anthem was lip syncing. The real girl who sang it wasn't "cute" enough, so they got a cute gal to lip sync it.

9. Here is what happened.
A small part of the fireworks show was simulated on TV. The "footprint" fireworks, 29 giant footprints leading up to the stadium, were actually fired live at that time, but what was broadcast on TV was a very convincing simulation of it. They used pre-recorded aerial footage of the flyover and had already added CGI graphics simulating the fireworks in the shape of footsteps.

At the same time that those fireworks were being fired in the city, the TV network showed the simulation footage instead of live footage from, say, a blimp or from a skyscraper. Only the last of the 29 "footprints," the one right outside the stadium, was actual live footage, because it was caught by a camera on the ground inside the stadium.

From what I have read on other web sites, the Chinese TV network made it abundantly clear that what was being broadcast was a simulation, not live footage. However, the NBC commentators were vague about this, and I think purposely. They said something like, "And this is Zhang's cinematic vision..." but they did not specifically say, "You're looking at a simulation" nor did the network put the word "Simulation" on the screen at that time.

Someone claims that early in the broadcast, hours before the simulated footage appeared, that the commentators mentioned it, but I have not seen that so I don't know what they said. The CGI footage certainly fooled me, as I thought it was live footage from probably a helicopter flying over the city towards the stadium. NBC certainly did not make it explicitly clear that they were showing a simulation.

Some people think this is no big deal, but where do you draw the line between this and a "Wag the Dog" scenario? Would it be possible to start a major war, based on a simulation of weapons of mass destruction? And that war could end up costing $3 trillion and over 4,000 American lives? Nahhh, I guess that could never happen...

11. I remember the commentators saying the firework footprints
were CGI, and that's after I had about 4 glasses of wine.

I didn't really understand WHY they were CGI, though.

14. Supposedly...
it was considered too dangerous to have close fly over filming during the live ones.

18. They should have just used a blimp, or put a camera on a nearby skyscraper,
and just panned horizontally as each one went off. That may have not looked as good as the flyover from above, but at least it would have been real. Zhang is a filmmaker so he should have thought about this. I think it's really cheesy to use simulated footage for such a major event.

21. I don't know why this
surprises anyone in the United States. The fact that the child was not 'pretty' enough is sad but comes as no surprise for China.
