Okay, another one for the gamer geek crowd here...
so my 10 day trial of World of Warcraft is up... and now I'm debating whether to actually buy the game or not. :) Actually I'm kinda annoyed that it ended today... this is my first completely free day where I woulda had a chance to sit and play. And I was planning on doing a social experiment, something along the lines of creating a male character and seeing how differently people reacted to me. :P

Actually I was thinking about trying one of the RP servers vs. the PVP servers that I already made characters on. And maybe trying a completely different character class, my last two were the overly balanced types that I usually use that are good for soloing. A little bit of magic, a little bit of healing, a little bit of DPS, a little bit of tanking... but not a lot of any one thing. One undead warlock, and one night elf druid. (of course, being the weirdo that I am, the minute I got the ability to transform my druid into a bear, I would turn into a bear and start dancing rancomly. Much funnier to have a big hairy bear doing a russian dance than it is to have a polygonned elf doing a sexy dance.)

Still... I'm torn as to whether I should keep playing. It is a time-sucker. And I've already got a bit on my plate.

10. Classic.
My brother is both a big WOW and South Park fan. Season 10 of South Park comes with a WOW subscription apparently. I'm totally getting it for his birthday, haha.

9. Well, I'm a huge non-fan of WoW.
I played for a while and then I stopped because it just wasn't something I enjoyed. It's fun but it's not great...too many concessions to non-geek gamers. It's like the Maxwell House of MMORPG; not great, not good, but mediocre and easy to get into and thus popular. If you like it, play it, once the novelty wears off...find something new.

I have some issue with the whole pay for the game, then pay for the subscription thing. If they want to charge you monthly...they should give the game away for free. Just my opinion.

What do I know though...my gaming-universe is Elder Scrolls. If they ever make an Elder Scrolls MMORPG...my employer will be filing a missing-person report on me.

12. I have an issue with that too...
but in this case it's only 20 bucks to buy and you get the first month free I believe. So it's only an extra what, 7 or 8 bucks?

I've played a few MMOs, and the ones I really got into seem to be the ones with a decent crafting system and the ability to solo if you want. The games that turn me off are the ones that FORCE you to group, and make it all but impossible to continue in the game without grouping all the time. So far I have two characters that I got up to level 15 and 16 without having to group. And one of my characters makes her own armor. So few people train themselves in skinning too, so I get a lot of material for free. I'm running from one area to the next and come across a dozen creatures that are dead but unskinned. :P

11. I did the same thing with City of Heroes
I made a female scantily clad toon and had other peeps hit on me. I heard later that if the toon had big boobs it was a pretty good indication that the player was a guy. I also heard that guys would make female toons because it was easier to get teams that way.

13. For me making a female character is just kind of a running gag. I have to have at least one.
Edited on Tue Aug-12-08 12:36 PM by DarkTirade
Because the first multiplayer game I ever played a decent amount of was Quake II. And there are three characters you can use in multiplayer. The male, the female and the robot/cyborg thing. The male is a huge hulking tank of a character. The robot/cyborg the same. The female is about as big around as my pinky. So when I played against two other guys, I figured "Why not A) stand out so they know who it is who just shot them in the face, and B) make myself smaller and more easily missed to keep them from shooting me in the face."

So now as a running gag I have to have at least one female character in every game I play. Multi-player or not.

Jedi Academy I usually play as a female Zabrak. When I tried Guild Wars all my characters were female. When I played Everquest my first character was a female. Come to think of it, so was my Froglok that I ended up playing most of the time... but with Frogloks you can't really tell the males from the females. I only picked female for that character because there were no purple skins for the males. :)

But yeah... you tend to get treated differently. I had a couple of weird stalker types when I first started out. People who would literally just follow me around and either challenge me to a duel repeatedly or invite me to group repeatedly. Most of them not saying a word. It was just fuckin' weird. Especially with my undead character... it's kinda hard to be hot when your flesh is falling off your body. But I actaully had fewer weirdos follow me around as a hot night elf than I did as a creepy undead chick. Go figure. Seriously though... only time I ever dueled with someone in WoW was when they actually TALKD TO ME first and asked me if I wanted to. That's one of the main reasons why I wanted to try an RP server. I figured they'd actually talk there.

14. I'm presently on WoW hiatus, while I'm waiting for the expansion to hit
As a geek gamer myself, I'd recomend leveling at least one character to 70 and then waiting for the expansion to come out. There are some incredibly cool changes and new quests/zones. To tide myself over I've been playing Age of Conan for the past few weeks, and am not going to have the billing renew when the first month free wears off. It is a lackluster game at best, although there is one thing that they do that I like alot, which is solo instances. I'll probably go back to WoW once my free month of Age of Conan is done.

18. Yeah, that's another thing I like about MMOs... the constantly updating and changing world.
You don't get that in a single player RPG.

My only complaint, though, is that you have to pay for the expansions. You're already paying a montly fee. Shouldn't that go towards expanding the game?

17. Two important questions:
1) can you solo your way through FFXI? I don't like being forced to group. :) and 2) What is the crafting system in that game like?

Actually, come to think of it... 3) is there a free demo I can try before I make up my mind? :P

19. free demo
not really. you get the first month free

soloing, there are a few solo jobs, like beastmaster and puppetmaster... there is a lot of stuff you need to do in groups, but plenty else to solo.

crafting is pretty easy... there are regional merchants and guilds all over the place that sell ingrediants and there are drops from monsters, etc... cooking is the easiest one, and the most usefull if you solo

I was hooked for a long time, and still am to an extent, but I don't let it suck up all my free time anymore.
