The standards for Who's Who are really slipping.
They just invited ME.

It must be based on the facts that I am a 36-year-old graduate student with a two-page CV consisting of the one publication I have in review and the two classes I've TAed.

Otherwise everyone else in Morgantown just REALLY sucks that bad.

2. Uh, there are about eight hundred pubs titled "Who's Who" out there, and all of them
but one are vanity publications...they make their money by sending invitations for a listing to thousands of people, then selling copies of the finished book to the people who respond. The only qaalification for getting listed is to reply to the mailing.

It's a BIG racket.

4. Yep. I've been approached countless times by these characters.

Usually, they call me at the office and then lavish praise an inch thick about what a "major player in the <your industry here>" I am, and how it would be "fitting recognition of your many accomplishments as a <your job title here>, to be included in this prestigious publication." After about five minutes of such flummery, I'm then invited to "reserve copies for your friends, family, and colleagues" at a special "honoree's rate" of about $100 a copy. Of course, the only copies of these books that would ever be printed are the ones I myself buy.

I'm thinking of starting a publication called "Who's Nobody?". I think it could be huge.

5. I get all the invitations by mail these days, but I do remember getting those calls
when I was in the electronics business, and therefore more visible to the telemarketers...

"Who's Nobody?" I like that. Sign me up for a listing; it should be fascinating reading.
