My neighbor had a major heat stroke on Sunday cutting grass in the heat of the day.
He is in the hospital, and I don't think he will make it.

His body temp was 107, and he had not woke up yet.

He was only 54 years old.

Everyone take care in this summer heat, please.

1. Oh dear!
Good vibes and white light for your neighbor.

I always knew lawns were evil...

2. Wow! That is scary.
This crazy heat always scares me. It is so easy to get overheated and dehydrate too.

5. Sunday was so very hot.
I couldn't stay out in the shady back yard more then 5
minutes, it was that hot and humid.

I have been to the hospital and his kidneys are shutting down.

He had passed out in the yard and no one saw him for a couple
of hours.

My neighbor was a good guy.

4. Geesh, I've never heard of such a thing
I hear about older people in apartments from time to time, but a relatively young person, outside?

That is really scary.

I hope he makes it.

12. Anyone can go down from heat stroke.
Age and physical condition have nothing to do with it. A twenty year old in perfect health can die from it. The body's internal cooling system can't cope with conditions, high temp, high humidity, dehydration. Once the internal thermostat is over loaded, the body's temp spikes, electrolyte balance goes to hell, cell damage. The brain is especially vulnerable.

So, the moral of this story is don't go out in conditions of high temps and humidity. If you must, wear head covering, loose clothing, drink lots of water and at max of 20 minutes, go inside or at least into shade. Early warning signs: rapid pulse, flushed dry skin (if you stop sweating, get indoors immediately), headache.

7. Coming home tonight, I passed a house in my neighborhood, and
the elderly owner was out mowing his lawn. It's cooled off considerably, but it's still in the 90s today. I can't understand why he couldn't just wait until the morning.

Nobody should do NUTHIN' at 5 pm on a summer afternoon--it's just too damn hot (unless you live pretty far north).

10. We have laws in California about working in the heat
There have been too many sad stories.

(And yeah, I know they're often ignored, but it's better than nothing. :( )

13. Yes, the laws are ignored.
Please sign the petition asking the California legislature to enforce the Heat Legislation. Thanks.

9. Oh no!
Heat stroke is for real.

When in doubt, don't go do heavy chores when it's hot out, and if you do, drink lots of liquid and take frequent breaks.
