I work in a call center, and normally I don't say who I work for but I'm going to break it on this occasion because otherwise it doesn't make sense. (I work for American Express). This is something that happens from time to time and when it happens at the end of the call you definitely need to take 1-2 minutes to log off the telephone and have yourself a jolly good laugh.

This one was extra special. I took this call as a "Supervisor" call. My peer had taken this call from a customer who wanted to dispute a charge on their credit card statement. This was a customer with a valid American Express account in good standing. She could not locate the charge for the customer on the account, and the customer insisted, "I see the charge here on my statement, it's dated XXX and it's for $XXX.XX". But no such charge was on the account. So the customer requested to speak to a supervisor and got me. I again reviewed the account, and because this customer had more than one American Express card, I reviewed those accounts too - again no such charge existed anywhere. Just to make sure, I asked the customer to read me the last 5 digits of the account number that's actually printed on the statement (American Express statements only print the account number on the payment stub, most of it is X'd out on all other pages). The customer dutifully read out the numbers and it didn't match any of her accounts with us. I said it didn't match. I then asked one last vital question. "At the top of the statement it says what type of card account the statement is for. Could you please read it to me?" The answer: "Visa".
