What shows would have been excellent if only 2 to 3 seasons?
After watching Life on Mars from the Jolly Old UK this week, I am convinced that some of our greatest shows in the US could have been as good as this if they just kept it short, just to one or two seasons.

The shows that popped up in my mind were: X Files, Millennium (which actually was only 3 seasons, but that wasn't the intent), LOST and Alias.

You think about some of the great shows like Arrested Development, and part of why that show is SOOOO great is that it only lasted 3 seasons. Never jumped the shark, never.

2. Oh yeah! With all respect to Woody Harrelson,
It should have ended before he had to take on his role.

TRIVIA: did you know that Grizzly Man (the guy who played with, and got eaten by a bear) almost had that role?

3. Seinfeld
only had 2 or 3 really good years, then went into a long, slow decline, and was only kept going to make money.

(awaits pounding from Seinfeld fans)

7. Agreed
In fact, it would have been great if they did that show Brit Style.

1 or 2 seasons, then the occasional Christmas Special when Jerry writes new material.

4. Northern Exposure
I know, I trot this one out every time there is a thread about TV shows...

But it would have been nice if the show had ended before it dissolved into a pale shadow of those first 3 to 4 seasons.

8. For sure at that point
But things like Shelly and Holling getting married and having a baby, Joel and Maggie finally hooking up... these things altered running tensions that made the show cool.

Alas... a show that quirky couldn't be sustained for long.

9. Most shows peak in the 3rd year
X files was great 3rd year, gave us Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose

Cagney and Lacey - I think that was the year Tyne Daly won her first emmy

Facts of Life - Don't laugh

Thirty Something

24

Law and Order Special Victims Unit - the year of Butchy McFabulous

11. I almost think Roseanne wrote the last few seasons bad on purpose

As to mock shows that have jumped the shark

I swear, she should have gotten a divorce and married Ted McGinley!

13. Star Trek was only three seasons.
And the third is mostly horrible, though that was a budget thing rather than lack of new ideas. NextGen and DS9 took that long to hit their stride and then did their best stuff in later seasons.

Still, it's funny how a show that only barely had enough episodes for syndication became so influential.
