What are you favorite and least favorite types of lounge threads?
What types of threads could the lounge use more of and what types would you like to see less of?

More PEV threads..especially more shirtless guy threads...

Of course, I dislike the threads that complain about what is funny and not funny in the lounge....Everybody has different humor standards and hide thread is your friend

3. I have a couple dislikes
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 10:11 AM by lizziegrace
posting an endless number of threads with a single youtube link and/or song lyric and not saying it in the subject line

subject lines that indicate distress but end up being a plea for attention to a thread in GD or a pout session (no one's paying attention to ME!!!)

I'm sure I could come up with a few more, but those are the biggies.

I personally like the banter between the NL East and NFC East fans in the Lounge. Those threads are so much fun!

Just baseball threads in general are fun too.

Word association threads - and the thread YOU started about misstated words - they're cool to jump into.

As for my least favorites - threads intended to start flamewars. I like the people here too much to see any of them get thrown under the bus. :(

My favorites are the Random Questions. I always look for those. Second favorite is Word Association.

Least favorite: YouTube links and song lyrics. Why, oh why, can't the OP just indictate that in the subject line? It might seem like a nitpick, but I'm on dial-up and I never click on YouTube. And I'm not going to read song lyrics, sorry. Don't have time!

27. Favorites - random questions and picture threads
I like silly, witty, humor threads but they tend to just happen - they aren't usually anything anyone plans.

Least favorite - I'll go along with the YouTube threads, I also find the "I'm leaving DU!" threads funny in a pathetic way but they make me cringe. If it's something you need to announce, you've invested far too much in it, imo.

57. If I may be so bold as to tout one of my own copycats...
Here's the original:
Women are attracted to different faces depending on their menstrual cycle

And here's the copycat:
Women attracted to different blackface depending on their minstrel cycle

In my seldom-humble opinion, a copycat is only worth posting if it's actually funny, which I agree disqualifies 99.9% of the ones we see here in the Lounge! And I also confess that I've posted a few of those in my day. Truly clever copycats, like Lionessprianka's post today, actually stand on their own and generate a discussion.

It's easy and tempting to dismiss copycats as a whole, simply because the huge bulk of them are crap. But there are a few gems in there, if you have the stomach to look for them!

Haven't seen Lioness's copycat, so I can't judge it. However, the two or three tolerable copycats out of each hundred aren't enough to motivate me to go looking for them. Copycat threads are a.) the only reason I ever use the "hide thread" function, and b.) the sole reason I've never applied to become a mod. I'd just close every one I saw based on my own preference, which is not what a mod should be doing. Knowing I had the power to close a dumbass thread would be just too much temptation, even though the dumbass thread wasn't in violation of the rules.

I like humor threads, picture threads and people sharing issues and problems in their lives (looking for DU input).

I am not a fan of the Youtube Music threads, people that post about every trivial happenings in their lives and the inside jokes and copycat threads (only about 1 in a 100 of the copycat threads are actually funny)

IMO, they are okay sometimes and they might just lead to a discussion for someone. But I hate to come here and see the same poster has typed about 20 consecutive posts for the sake of posting:

First post: I just ate cheese.

Second post: Swiss cheese is good.

Third post: Cheese is for lovers!

Fourth post: Cheese is sexy!

and on and on.

Yes, I can ignore them, but I have to wonder about the person who feels the need to do this.

39. People who post copycat thread seldom think that they're funny
The "joke," if such it may be called, lies in the sledgehammer-to-the-head overkill of it all. No single copycat is funny or original (well, not often) but in the aggregate the raw disgust that they generate is analogous to a joke (at least to those who find it funny).

52. Good luck with that one.
Hey, I think that Andy Kaufman was an over-rated hack whose entire schtick falls apart once you get the joke, and I got the joke shortly after I first saw him hit the stage.

So it's entirely understandable that the subtle and sophisticated humor of a well-executed copycat thread is lost on those who don't care to appreciate them.

(FWIW, I'm being deliberately hyper-dramatic in the above, but certain copycats still amuse me greatly).

Seriously: if you find copycat threads to be spam, alert the mods.

35. Hmm...
Favorites:
--Funny/interesting anecdotes about real life (LaraMN's Jack stories, Droopy's stories about the road, etc.)
--Links to threads in GD, etc. that I might otherwise have missed
--Discussions about music
--Random but harmless questions/polls, though preferably not about stuff/people in the news ("Triscuits or Wheat Thins?" "Blue or Green?")

Least Favorites:
--Picture threads. Just not a fan of seeing the same photos again and again and again
--Copycats. Yawn.
--"Boobies!" threads with pictures of the birds. Been done before, folks. Also, "sausage!" or "cock!" threads. You're really not funny, nor are you even remotely original.
--GBCW threads. Don't let the door hit you on your way out.
--Threads where the OP has poor grammar, neglects capital letters, etc. We all make mistakes. Posts with crappy grammar, however, tend to be ignored by me, simply because the mental image in my head is that of a none-too-bright six-year-old experiencing the internet for the first time. I don't doubt you're bright and older than six, but I can't get past that image. Sorry.
--A million threads with just song lyrics or YouTube links without context or reason. Stop spamming the board. Even prefacing it with, "This is a favorite song of mine lately" or something is better than nothing.
--Too many threads by one person in general. It reeks of attention-seeking and desperation.

;)

If you're going to leave DU, do it. We don't need the melodrama or complaints about "the good old DU" or veiled (or not-so-veiled) snark at other members with whom you've had run-ins for the past few weeks. More often than not these, too, are desperate, attention-seeking posts wherein the OP tries to get people to say "OH NO DON'T LEAVE!"

Music threads are usually enjoyable, I've found some good stuff through those. (But then I'm a music nerd, so it's only fitting that i would enjoy those.)

Copycats are usually awful. And of course the "Hip-hop isn't music" or "There hasn't been any good music since 1976" type threads. Those are always stupid.

I like the ones best where people share something about their lives so we get to know more about them. Even the what are you doing right now kinds make me click to see wassup. I usually won't click on the copy-cat treads although, reading all the creative title variations can be funny. I comb the lounge once or twice a day to see who is here and what's going on. I hope I become a better lounge contributer in the future. Like maybe starting some of those substantive threads I was longing for.

Since that means I got there too late to determine if I wanted in on it or not :P

63. The best are the ones with stories about work experiences or people's childhoods....
The worst are the popularity contests that make most of us feel ignored.

69. its not so much a thread but a response that irritates me:
when people post saying "what is ignored saying?"

seriously... dont you have the person on ignore so that you dont want to know what they are saying?

passive aggressive crap.

also people who have no empathy. lots of them around here. someone posts about suicidal friend, one interjects their BS assholery into the thread etc

83. or when you reply to someone,
and it wasn't what they wanted to hear, so they blast you.

I agree, there is a lot of lack empathy, or some who need so much validation that they don't even realize when you're giving it to them.

74. Favorites: ones that make fun of trolls.
Either banned, or not yet banned.

Least favorite: threads with no sense of humor, or killjoys. For example, somebody starts a threads asking for DUer's memories about their fathers, and you get ten or fifeteen responses about fart jokes, or the time Dad stapled his hand shingling the roof, and so on. And then some asshole shows up talking about how all their memories of their father is how he used to beat them, or molest them every day after school. And it generates a million sympathetic replies, effectively killing the thread.

76. Least favourite: Give Me Vibe threads.
It's not so bad when they are asking for advice or need support they can't get fromt their families. But "I'm going for a job interview...give me vibes" or "I can't tell you why, but give me vibes" or "I'm sad, give me vibes" posts are borning because they get about a thousand boring responses. I usually don't even bother clicking on them.

I also hate threads that just have lyrics or a poem posted, unless they are completely original (by the poster). In general I hate whiny threads about cliques and how DU has fallen. I hate personal threads that I don't get.

Love: Advice threads. Funny "oscar-type" threads. Movie discussion threads. Flame-war topic threads.

79. What I love about threads about favorites
Always, and I mean always, there seems to be an unspoken competition to name the most obscure favorite.

Ask for a "favorite movie" and someone will chime in with a reference to a Bolivian "new wave"
film filmed on the Kergulean Islands in 1942, or something like that.

Nobody can say it sucks then, I suppose.

86. Least favorite: when people ask for advice, but never respond....
when you give advice, or even say thanks. That's one of my biggest peeves.

Don't really have a most favorite, other than threads started by the Loungers I like most. And no, I won't name them, because then I would be starting another type of thread I dislike: the popularity contests, or threads that turn into them.

90. You know sometimes I think it's hard to thank everyone
that responds to a post. I know I have felt funny posting thank yous to a dozen or more posters. I try posting a thank you at the bottom of my orignial post, but it doesn't seem to do the job.

My peeve is with people who make no effort at all to say thanks. I no longer respond to requests for advice because of that as a general rule.

or some other funny word to replace a word in the title of a movie, or a potatoe, and threads about parking space problems, and threads about daily things and activities that are obscure, simple, but odd.

89. I love joke threads, and pictures esp kitties and babies. I love the ;What's for Dinner?
threads. Those are great.

Good general discussion threads, with some silliness thrown int are always fun.
The threads that alert us to trainwrecks, hilarious thread highjacks and funny flamewars whether they are in the Lounge , GD, GDP, or elsewhere are great..those are the surprises.

Stuff like Oscar that just take on a life of their own.

The creative insertion of the Brazillion Joke. I don't care, it makes me laugh every time, even if only for the way I got tricked into opening it.
I also enjoy the asking for advice threads, when they are about topics in which there can be a wide variety of responses. Those are usually interesting.

I HATE COPYCAT THREADS, although sometimes the copycat phrase is very clever and punny. Those are OK but I don't click on them, just enjoy the pun
