Poll question: Best sideman in a comedy movie.
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 10:58 PM by bluesbassman
Just saw Tropic Thunder. It got me to thinking about some of the best comedy movies, and the supporting roles that helped make those movies great. Post your own, as I'm sure I left some out.

Edited to fix John Bulushi's entry.

1. Gotta go with the "Gig".

Everybody's wing man.

Really showed his abilities in "They Shoot Horses, Don't They", though.

Still haven't gotten over that movie DECADES later....

but not sure I'd give him the nod for his great comedic roles. Did you have a particular one in mind?

I was thinking supporting roles that help "make" the movie.

I would agree though, that Murray has made some lousy films, but haven't they all?

had all the best lines:

"So your life's in the crapper. So you wife is banging a used car salesman - it's humiliating, I know. But goddamnit, Harry, take it like a man!"

44. She was a pure delight in "Paper Moon"
I just meant that so many gifted comediennes have died of ovarian cancer: Gilda Radner, Madeline Kahn, Sandy Dennis, Alice Pearce and Linda Smith among others. It's a particularly nasty disease - by the time the symptoms are obvious it's usually too late to treat effectively, and it tends to hit youngish women.

41. Chico Marx in any of their movies
Always a perfect foil to Groucho, and a musical additive to boot. He had a verbal arsenal, that when paired with Groucho was amazing. It was also the reason Harpo went wordless.

Chico: "I ask you a question. What is it what gotta long trunk and weigh 900 pounds?"

Judge: "That's irrelevant!"

Chico: "Ay atsa right, that's a relephant."
