another dumb mac user question for the saintly
can someone explain why I cannot (or if I can, how can I?) install OS X for a g-4 on my old clamshell ibook which is running os 9 and, thus, is nearly useless for much online stuff because it won't support the stuff... like the newest Acrobat reader, for instance?

I tried doing this once, and my iBook wouldn't do anything.

help, help! I cannot buy more computer stuff at this time.

1. It could be a number of things
Like RAM or HD space come to mind first, especially on that old clamshell iBook.

Secondly, there is no direct path to the OSX you have from OS9. First you need to upgrade the iBook to 9.2, then from 9.2 to OSX.

My guess is that your problem is a combination of both these issues. Buy more ram, free up disk space, and find a copy of 9.2.

3. I am not 100% sure you need 9.2 to install OS X, just if you want classic
I am wondering if perhaps rain has an OS X upgrade disk that is looking for a previous version of X, or maybe his installer disk is specific to his G4 model (and therefore doesn't support g3s), or maybe his disk is a DVD which of course the clamshell can't read. Hopefully rain will reply w what installer is saying. . . .

2. What is the installer saying? What dialog box do you get when you try it?
Raindog - I do have a friend w a clamshell iBook, and he installed OS X 10.2 on it and it is running fine. There were some issues about disk space. . .you need 2 gigs free, but he did a custom install and chose not to install most of the extra languages.

So when you try to install, what do the dialog boxes say? How do they phrase "You can't install OS X?"

4. You should be able to do it.
Which version of OS X are you attempting to install and what are the error messages saying? How much RAM and hard disk space is on the iBook?

5. Check the Apple class action lawsuit
Some relatively recent Macs apparently aren't able to install OS X.

Apple settled a couple of months back.

You might want to check and see if your clamshell iBook is on the list of models that won't run OS X.
