32. "Ah, Rutgers, Rutgers"
-- Mr. Magoo, most famous fictional Rutgers almunus

I graduated from Rutgers (Livingston College) in 1975. My daughter went there for two years, 2002-2004, before the out-of-state tuition became too much for us.

Good luck to you! Make the most of your time there. Make sure you visit the Log Cabin at Cook College in spring when the trees are blooming. Check out Doll's Restaurant in New Brunswick. Rutgers is a many-faceted place, with something to offer everyone.

44. English
I was one of the first students at Livingston when it opened in September, 1969. There were 500 of us. Much of the campus was mud and construction debris. We didn't even have shower curtains or toilet seats in some of the dorms.

What year did your dad graduate?

I should have graduated in 1973, but went full time for two years, then part time for the next 4 years while working as a reporter at local weekly newspapers. I ended up as a journalist and worked for the Star-Ledger for 11 years before we moved to Maryland.

When I started at Rutgers, the English professors told me I'd be better off majoring in English and picking up journalism on the job. That was a good idea back then, especially since Rutgers had abolished its journalism department in 1968-69 and replaced it with an abomination called Human Communications.

Good luck to you at Douglass. It's a good school, with lots of traditions and a lovely campus. I wonder if the freshmen still have to wear "dink" beanies.

35. A lot of people say that about college.
That's why I think our "youth culture" isn't really youth culture at all, just a corporate pitch to sell crap to young people. I think a real youth culture would improve the lives of people regardless of their age. But i'm rambling. Stop me before I go on a tangent about new commons and flowers versus funnels.

28. RPh beat me to some great advice
Another I'd add is - look into Study Abroad opportunities NOW. They often have odd course requirements, and you don't want to check it out in your sophomore year and find out that you can't go because of some stupid freshman requirement you missed.

Definitely find a group (uh, I don't know, maybe DEMOCRATS/OBAMA SUPPORTERS?)

Be sure to take advantage of all the "extras" - good cheap theater, good cheap sports to participate in, good cheap culture

Enjoy!!!!

38. I don't even like the taste of alcohol.
The only thing I might do is the occasional joint. And only if I know the grower. Wouldn't want to support some violent cartel, after all. Don't worry, I won't in to class high.

Study hard, but HAVE FUN! (If you don't have a car, get one -- it makes things MUCH easier.)

My first three years of college sucked. I'm now approaching semi-normal...in my fourth year. :(

Hope you do better.
