actually I am going to go lie down for a while but I will be back.

oh my hand? well the morning was ok but the flat tire on the way home and subsequent loss of two fingertips was kind of a bummer

pulled the entire nail off of right ring finger and I am sure I will be loosing the pinky's too, may have fractured the tips as well, they are pretty blue and very swollen already. ouch

my son will never put the jack in the wrong spot again, I bet, and I will never not double check where somebody else puts a jack! Nor will I hold a tire in place while someone is jacking with my hand on the top of the tire and under the edge of the wheel well. Because when the jack slips out of position and the truck drops on the tire catching your hand between you can sure hurt yourself.

Pic to follow bwahahahahahahah (no, I have bandaids on so it will be a while before I do that) owww

4. Oh, jeez. I feel for you. There's just about NOTHING more painful than ripping off a
a fingernail. And I know from pain, trust me.

Have a drink. Have several, if you need. And accept my best wishes for your fingers to stop hurting soon.

10. I smashed my thumb with a hammer once.
1st thought: That was really stupid.
2nd thought: Wow! there is a lot of blood pumping out of this, I need to see a doctor.
3rd thought: My "informal" job just came to an end and I don't have insurance - - OH SHIT!

At the ER the doctor asks me if I am in pain, and seems surprised when I tell him I'm not.
Doctor the says that he is going to have to stitch it up, but first he has to inject Novocaine
under my dangling thumb nail, and that will hurt.
It did. Doctor told me I really should get some insurance. I paid with a Visa card, ouch.

Rest,ice and elevation. (RICE)
Have someone look at it.

12. thanks everybody
I think I will just do a single reply. Typing isn't too bad but having to hunt and peck for half the right hand is kind of awkward.

trying to think of the questions, yes I would love some of your hydrocodone stash (more on that issue in a moment), yep it sure could have been worse - I have pretty good reflexes otherwise it would have caught my whole hand and that would have been a major problem, lastly (I think, can't remember everybody's post and I already have too many tabs open) yes I am right handed - spastically so. I can't do ANYTHING with my left hand. I tried to take a picture of it a while ago and it took like 10 tries with the left hand, of course the camera is totally built for righties but still...

I got so mad trying to get into the docs office this afternoon I actually didn't hurt so bad. I wrote them a letter and I am still thinking of mailing it but I may turn it into a more general letter and include my complaint with the hospital too as a letter to the editor. My problem with the hospital? They wouldn't tell me even a baseline amount for how much it would cost to walk in the emergency room doors (I know how much it is, just wanted them to actually tell me beforehand)

So anyway, I know this is kind of long and serious for the lounge on friday night but what do you think?

Dear Drs. XXXXX and XXXXX:

This is a brief letter of complaint regarding your office procedures. Today I sustained a rather painful but basically untreatable injury to two fingers (crushed and nail pulled completely off one, will probably lose the other) Knowing there wasn't much to be done I took some aspirin and prepared to get over it. Well, the pain was rather intense as you might imagine. Since it was Friday and I didn't want to have to spend the weekend like this I decided to see if I could come into your office and get a prescription for something stronger. I called and was told there were no appointments available for two weeks. I explained that I had a bit of an emergency here, it would likely be on its way to healing in two weeks, and since I am not insured I really didn't want to have to pay hundreds of dollars to get a simple prescription through the hospital emergency department.

Your office staff person (I did not get a name) was adamant that your schedules were completely full and there would be no way to see me even for two minutes to write a prescription.

I understand one has to follow procedures and I have no problem paying for an office visit even when a phone call could solve a problem, but to not even make an effort to accommodate a somewhat urgent situation like this is really poor customer service. She didn't even double check with anybody else in the office, certainly not any of you doctors.

Our families have known each other for a long time and while I don't like to pull those kinds of strings to get things done for myself, I will take this opportunity to bring the problem to your attention because I know I can't be the only person in this situation. Perhaps in your efforts to serve the community you might have some suggestions or solutions to offer either your clinic or the hospital to alleviate this kind of dilemma. After all, there are 47 million of us in the US now.

Thankyou

It seems pretty ridiculous they couldn't fit you in.

Hope you've got something for the pain and that you heal quickly.

14. Lost one of my nails in a lawn mower accident. If the nail bed is still there it will grow back.

Having a nail ripped out sure makes you want
to hurl though. Painful and not pretty.

21. Update
tempted to post a picture for shock value but I might get in trouble. Suich was so kind to ask in another thread how I was doing and I have to say this has been one of my more interesting injuries. It was quite painfull for most of the day yesterday but isn't even bothering me today! Ugly as hell and leaky (have to change the bandaid every couple of hours - tried to let it air dry some today but it keeps dripping ewww TMI, I know)

I am obviously not out fixing barbed wire fence or anything but the pain is pretty much gone. Thanks again everybody.

Oh man, I know exactly what you're going through, did the same thing with 7 out of my 10 fingernails within a three week period, working at temp job in the middle of February with a staple hammer tacker.

26. wow has it been a week already?
well, the letter to the docs is still sitting in the printer tray and I haven't done anything else.

Fingers are better (thanks) - ugly but I even saddled and rode today without bandaids, although I bumped them a couple times and cussed myself for forgetting to put them on. Going to lose the pinky's I am sure, no sign of regrowth on the ring but it is feeling better.

Where is the picture taken from? looks like west of town?

Seriously, though, that sounds painful as hell. Keep that hand elevated. If you have decent insurance you might want to go to the ER and get it x-rayed.

Ouch!

29. Owwwwwwwwwww
I hate injuries to finger or toenails because they usually end up growing back funny. I dropped one heavy box on my big toe once, and it ended up growing super thick for half a year before it began to grow out normally.
