I have an old original iPod mini that I haven't used in years. I have a new classic on order that will be here in a few days, so I figured I better get prepared for it's arrival. I HATE iTunes (although in fairness I haven't used it in a long time) so I got MediaMonkey - the same program I used back then w/ the iPod so iTunes never had to touch my machine. It was an awesome program then - and it's even MORE awesome now. If it doesn't do something you want it to natively, chances are there's a plugin for it, OR if you know how to write scripts you can do that too. (Or find someone else that has written one)
I've been playing with the newer version for a few days, cleaning up tags, etc. I just found the setting today that allows you to sync more than one genre to the iPod. :woohoo: There is a bit of a learning curve - but their forums are awesome. Free version of the program will probably do everything you need, I need the Gold version (19.95 or 39.95 for a lifetime upgrade license - but check your PM) because a large percentage of my music is in FLAC format and MediaMonkey converts files ON THE FLY while moving them to the iPod. That's one of the main reasons I started using it a few years ago.
With MediaMonkey you can completely shitcan iTunes. :woohoo: I'd suggest reading the forums a bit for some tips and tricks on how to best make that switch though.
MediaMonkey is the SHIZNIT. (You will have to enable the feature to sync more than one genre - it's not set by default, FYI)
