Watching The Sound of Music...
it seems so different, now, to watch it after so many years.

The way Christopher Plummer talked to Julie Andrews in the movie was really rude. How did I not see this when I was young? Was the world such a different place when that movie was made?

I still think he was very handsome, though.

1. Some men are still just as rude today.
Pickings are slim.

2. I'm watching the "I am sixteen going on seventeen" part now...
it really is a sexist movie, you know.

Especially the line, "You need someone telling you what to do."

*sigh*

3. It's a well-made film.
The subdued colors, the authentic period costumes, the way the songs are woven into the story, the complete lack of garish show-stopping production numbers, the way the spectacular scenery is incorporated without overshadowing the actors or story... it's a masterful film adaptation of a Broadway musical.

5. I used to love it, really
Even saw the broadway musical when I was 12. Though I was very disappointed Pernell Roberts (who played Captain Von Trapp) didn't have any hair! lol

8. Yes, the world was that different
esp 1930s/40s Austria when this was taking place. Imperial manner still ruled, and in some ways, if you want to get along with the old folks, you'll dust off those regal manners too.

Just the nature of the two female leads....

One is the Baroness who is his equal in social standing (if not a bit above). She's stylish and world weary.

The other is an apprentice nun from a nondescript background.

One woman is more suitable, the other is totally wrong from the standpoint of social expectations.

If you don't have this, you don't have 1/2 the story.

I really love the music and the story, but the sexist nature of it is truely cringe-worthy now.

10. It is cringe-worthy now
And it wasn't cringe-worthy even in the 1960's-- when the movie was made.

That's what got me thinking.

Thanks for your response. :hi:

9. My wife had a total crush on him
For me, if this film was lost, never to be seen again, it would be perfectly OK.

12. Ahhh goody
My hope is that my son will never have to suffer from that movie. He truly would shrivel up and go to sleep in that film.

The girl - however - would probably bounce around (she's into hopping these days) until the flick ended.

13. There are some great tunes in it
I used to sing to the sound track, constantly, when I was little! In fact, it's one of the only soundtracks I know every single word to! lol

14. I thought he was very rude 35 years ago when I first watched it. He only half
sweetened up once he fell in love with her. But to give him a break..he was being chased by nazis at the time.

21. I all but cry when I hear Edelweiss knowing....
It was the last song written by Oscar Hammerstein. He died soon after composing the lyrics from stomach cancer, and he knew he was dying when he wrote the song.
