We ended up driving through Watts and Compton today.
We went to the California Science Center near USC and got lost looking for someplace to eat lunch. I forgot my GPS at home (we used it in my parents' rental car when they visited).

Seeing the conditions there made me really sad.

1. I can imagine.
Its changed a little bit, but I have a relative who lives on Capitol Hill in a nice neighborhood but all you had to do was drive to the bottom of a hill to see a drastically different type of neighborhood.....

2. I have heard that about DC
I have visited DC a few times but only went to the monuments, the mall, the reflecting pool, the Capitol, the White House, Arlington, the Air and Space Museum and the Vietnam War Memorial.

3. Oh you will like this
He had an old school accross the street from him that was closed a few years back. It was supposed to be turned into a homeless shelter but thanks to a particularly vocal neighbor (Trent Lott!) it was turned into a high end gym with MILLION dollar one bedroom condos..AND the housing project at the bottom of the hill got demolished. Now it reduced crime in the neighborhood to some extent but it made me sad to see poor people basically pushed out of sight and mind of the neighbors. I suppose Sen Lott had no wish to encounter an actual needy person.

6. Yeah, what they do not tell you is that much of Hollywood is pretty bleak.

8. The juxtaposition of so much ugly right up next to so much opulence is mind boggling.
