I was just escorted out of the new Middle School by the police officer.
Because I...wait for it.

Brought Taco Bell to a friend's daughter for her birthday. OMG!!!! THE HORROR!~!~~!!~~ I'm surprised he didn't taser me.

Here's the deal.

My friend called me last night to ask if I could bring her daughter Annie Taco Bell, ( :puke: ) because she works full time. Of course, I said yes. I go get the Taco Bell, and go up to the middle school.

I signed up, got a badge and when asked by the less than friendly lady behind the desk if she could help me, replied "I'm just dropping off lunch". She then asked "Does your daughter know you're bringing, it or your son?" I replied: "It's not for her, it's for a friend's little girl, it's her birthday".

She stares at me. I look up from signing the badge and ask "Is there a problem?"

She replies: "No, do you know where you're going?"

Me: "Yes, thanks" and leave.

I head into the cafeteria and stand next to the assistant principal and the school cop (who shall from henceforth be known as the bald douchebag) and scan the crowd to see where Annie is.

She sees me, gets up, comes over and hugs me and brings me back to her table.

I sit down, spread out her lunch, give her the little gift I got her and start chatting.

Over comes bald douchebag and beckons to me.

I go out into the hall with BD and he starts questioning me like I'm a fucking criminal. Why are you here? Whose child is that? blah, blah, blah. I answered that a friend asked me to bring her daughter lunch for her birthday.

"Well,", says BD, "we just can't let you come in here and have lunch with anybody's child".

Me: "Why not? Is Taco Bell a Weapon of Mass Desstruction?" (Yeah, I got smart assey because I knew where this was heading.

He starts to walk me down the hall and I say "Wow, this place sure is a prison".

BD: "No, it isn't a prison, but we can't let you have lunch with the parents' permission".

Me: "If you COULD get ahold of them to ask for permission, I wouldn't be here. She asked me to come up because she's over at the elementary school working as an aide for special ed".

At the door:

BD: "You have a nice day"

ME: "You too. I mean, I know how hard this is keeping fast food out of the hands of sixth graders. You're a true hero"

Then I saluted him.

Fuckers.

I wrote a letter to the Principal, the School Board Chairwoman and the CHief of Police. If they're gonna have rules like this at the school my taxes paid for, they fucking better let people know so they don't end up where I was today.

I will keep you posted on the off chance officer DB apologies like I asked for.

Taco Bell is a weapon of mass destruction

ass destruction, at least. That cop probably changes into his janitor outfit after 4 pm. You wanna clean out that shit-rimmed bowl?

I think not.

How about thinking about others, for a change.

It's NOT the school principal.

It's the fact that you brought her TACO BELL. TACO BELL? Are you trying to poison this child?

You KNOW that TACO BUENO is far superior. TACO BUENO: More processed goop + less horse meat = Child Genius.

If only EVERY child could eat TACO BUENO for lunch... if only ((starts getting weepy))...

If it was such an issue, why didn't the cop say something when I was standing there looking for her?

Oh, right. Because it wasn't. The aide didn't have enough to do.

that they thought you were just dropping something off, and when you sat down with the child that changed the situation. But you're right, I know nothing about public schools despite going to them and years of picking up and dropping off my nephew from his.

I've seen the light! Damn that stupid school! Any adult with a VISITOR badge should be able to do pretty much what they want, because any adult with a VISITOR badge can't possibly be up to no good. Curse that security guard for putting a child's safety first! You had a Taco Bell bag, darnit! That's the international symbol for "I Belong Here"!

statistically, most crimes against children are committed by someone they know. Betcha that phrase pops up repeatedly in the cop's training. Sounds like somebody is irritated that the new school doesn't automatically treat them the same way the old school does.

48. Hello? She 1. Signed in in the office (I am sure because that is where
I sign in and where most parents sign in and get their badges) and received a badge. 2. Stood next to this dink and the asst. principal until the child ran up to her. 3. Was hugged by the child because, yes, children run up and hug strangers all the time in their overwhelming desire for Taco Bell. A bit harsh, aren't you? I've never been to a school (within the last 10 years) that hasn't had a very guarded entryway and office sign in procedure. Did Midlo kill your dog?

52. Thanks, sweetie. hedges brought up an interssting point.
I AM listed on this child's card as the contact number for emergencies. If the cop was that worried, why didn't they look it up on the card?

My friend who is principal at the elementary school where my kids went was horrified when I told her. She said "MY God, we have people bring lunch to kids all the time".

Which is true. I do it a lot. When a kid asks me if I will bring them lunch, because they've seen me bring lunch to another kid, how could I refuse?

And, considering where we live and the crime rate? It was so over the top it was ridiculous. How welcoming to the parents.

If this is the way they're going to behave, they should just put a 'No Visitors' sign on the front door. Which would be another issue altogether.

96. I work at an Elementary School....
Your schools proceedures are like ours and if you were on the card...you could have walked out with the kid if you had a mind too. The officer needs to apologize to you at most, and review the policy at the very least. And yes I would talk to the principal, or better yet have the childs mother talk to them.

We have parents come in all the time for lunch. The kid LOVES it as do the other kids at the table. Nothing boosts a child ego and makes them feel special than to have adult attention. Once they turn teen...they won't get 6 feet near you with out :eyes::blush:. Enjoy it while you can.

Your taxes pay for this guy. Please post the response you receive from the school and the police. This is so way over the top. And the poster above is right, the children are learning that this is what is to be expected by the police in their community.

I would ask for a list of what exactly, specifically his duties are and where you transgressed.

150. The day they stop allowing PARENTS to visit school any damned time they want to
is the day I start to home school. They certainly have the right to verify our identity upon entering the school and prior to giving out the visitor badge but we have the right to observe, with no advanced notice, the way they treat our children.

It sort of makes you wonder what kind of respect this security guard is showing to the children. My guess is that he's a rude bastard to the kids too.

Keep rocking the boat Midlo, we need more parents who are willing to do so.

I take TACO BELL to a school, sign in acting like I'm a parent, go to the lunchroom and stand next to the cop and the lunchroom-in-charge-person, and stand there until the BAIT of my TACO BELL compels (and it always does) some strange child I've never seen to jump up, run to me, hug me, and ask me to come back to the table.

That's what all the smart child abductors are doing nowadays.

I actually managed to hook over 150 last year using THE TACO BELL as bait like that.

101. I think around 9.
The earliest I've ever gotten there is 9:30, and they seem to just be getting cranking about that time. If you've never been, GO. It's really fun. And the jewelry store Cebu on Santee Street is one of the best (and cheapest) places to pick up trendy costume jewelry.

:(

I also love the fact that the middle of the alley is always a little damp and no one knows why :scared:

Santee is okay, but the best parts of the Fashion District are the fabrics and notions stores and the black church clothes stores, oh and the bakery at Olympic and Wall that has these weird potato/slaw sandwiches that are strangely delicious.

If you get there early enough in the morning, the nearby flower district is the cheapest place to get flowers anywhere.

35. Why is it that some school office employees are so
Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 01:07 PM by LibDemAlways
damn mean? At my daughter's high school the office personnel treat everyone who walks through the door - students and parents alike - as though they were just caught in a criminal act.

Last week at the start of school my daughter was assigned a broken locker. She asked me to come to the office with her after school to see about getting a different one. I explained the problem to the woman in the main office and asked who I needed to talk to. I was directed to an office down a hallway. I walked down the hallway to the other office and was stopped by a scowling woman.

Woman: What are you doing here?
Me: My daughter was assigned a broken locker. She's been carrying her books around all day. I need to see about getting her another one.
Woman: The person who takes care of that is at a meeting. This part of the building is closed. You have to leave.
Me: Wait a minute. I was told to come here.
Woman: Who told you that?
Me: The person in the main office.
Woman: Well she shouldn't have told you that.
Me: Look, I'm just trying to see about getting my daughter a new locker. Can I leave a note for the person who handles these sorts of problems?
Woman: (Very pissed at me - grabs a piece of paper and shoves it at me) Here.

I write a note explaining my daughter's situation and leave.

Next day I receive a call from the woman who handles locker issues.

Woman #2: I understand your daughter has a broken locker.
Me: Yes
Woman #2: We have a janitor looking at broken lockers. He has to determine which ones can be fixed and which ones can't. If your daughter's can be fixed it will be but it may take a couple of weeks.
Me: That's unacceptable. She shouldn't have been assigned a broken locker in the first place. I've looked at it and it's beyond repair. She needs to be assigned a different one. She can't keep carrying a bunch of heavy books around all day every day.
Woman #2: I don't know what to tell you. That's the best I can do.
Me: You don't have another locker you can assign her? How did she get assigned a broken locker in the first place?
Woman #2 (sarcastically): The computer assigns the lockers, I don't.

At that point I told her as politely as I could that I wanted my daughter to have a new locker by the next day or I would show up at the principal's office and wouldn't leave until the problem was taken care of. The next day she had her locker, but I should not have had to jump through hoops to get it for her.

In your case Officer Douchbag was out of line. You checked in with the office and had permission to be on campus. You had the mother's permission to bring lunch to the child and she was expecting you.

Give a person a little bit of authority and watch as they abuse it. A very common scenario.

37. I know. The front office people at the elementary school
don't even speak to you unless you clear your throat or something. When my eldest went to the old middle school, I was shocked the first day at how unbelievably pleasant they were! They actually acted as though they were pleased to see you! It was quite a revelation.

A friend of mine works in the front office at the high school, so there's no issue there.

This woman in the new middle school just seemed so pissed that I was interrupting her day.

Why do people take jobs like that if they don't want to deal with the public? Generally when you go into the main office, it's not for a bad thing. It's to bring something to school, or volunteer.

Don't get it.

volunteers man the front office desk much of the time as a line of defense between visitors and the staff, who mostly don't want to be bothered. They also staff the "student window" where students are required to report before entering the office. It's probably a good thing, though, because the parents tend to be way nicer and more understanding than the employees - especially in dealing with the kids.

It was a very happy place when my eldest was in K and 1st. Then, new administration and poof. There went all the fun, all the joy.

This new principal is wonderful. She truly LOVES being around kids.

She did tell me though, that the previous principal caused so much angst at the school that no one wanted the job. She was pretty much asked to take it.

How awful is that? What a horrible environment for both staff and kids alike.

If my daughter's school let someone they didn't know from Adam come in and give her food, I'd have her pulled out of there like that.

I know you were just trying to do something nice for Annie, but they had NO reason to know that. They had no reason to believe you. Are you even listed on the "authorized adult" form they keep on file in the office?

Schools have no business allowing people they have no authorization for into the building. If they did anything wrong, it was letting you get as far as you did.

Nothing personal, Midlo. But you're WAY overreacting to a school simply trying to protect its students.

I'm my friends emergency number. If they were that concerned, all they had to do was look up the little yellow card.

And, I could see their concern if the child was five. But, she's 11, today, in fact, and she came up to greet me when she saw me. If it was an issue, why didn't the cop stop me then?

Because the harpie in the office decided to make it an issue. All she had to do was look up the yellow card if she was that concerned.

50. Okay, then. If you're on the card, they probably overreacted.
I don't know if there's some obscure rule in the handbook that says you shouldn't have been allowed to come in with tacos; but if not, they should have been more accomodating.

Still, as a parent, I'd rather my kid's school err on the side of caution. Maybe they did you wrong; but you should at least be happy people can't just randomly come in and give your kids contraband. If they're so hostile to your (authorized) presence, one can only imagine they wouldn't let a real threat get far. :)

My God, ask LeftyMom or Lost or swimboy. I am about as unintimidating a person as you will find. Shorts/tee shirt/flip flops.

The woman in the main office is kinda nasty and I guess wanted to prove how powerful she is.

Given the crime rate around here, as well, it was a huge overreaction. I mean, the way this school is designed, the front office sees you coming from the parking lot.

Interestingly, I dropped off a check for fees for a different friend on Tuesday because her son forgot to take it with him. They were actually rather nice at that point.

Hmmmmm.

63. Entirely possible, although I did tell the officer that her mother
had asked me to bring lunch.

By the time a child hits middle school, if their allergies are that severe as to be life threatening, the child should know what not to eat.

I mean, seriously, are there a raft of terrorists just waiting to pounce on kids with fast food? Every single time I've been asked to bring lunch to a kid, the parents knew about it. If the parent wasn't there for the exchange, I would call them to tell them.

There aren't a lot of moms just roaming the county looking to bring lunch to children that aren't theirs.

There was no logic to this.

105. Okay, now before everyone jumps my shit
I'm gonna just give a smidge of insight from both sides of the fence, but only 'cause you posted about the incident... LOL!

I work at a middle school in VA. I am also retired from law enforcement in VA. This all could have been avoided had the mother of the girl called over to the school, or had another teacher/secretary/administrator in her school call or send a two sentence email over to the middle school to let them know you were coming.

Bringing birthday lunch to a kid at school isn't a crime. Doing a favor for a friend isn't a crime. But, if some sick, twisted nut that your kid might have even known as a neighbor/friend gave a poisoned lunch to YOUR kid and killed them you can hopefully see why, in this day and time, we have to have such stupid-ass policies in schools and life in general. People do weird, crazy, sick stuff. I know they KNOW you. I know you are a parent at that school, but we never know when/where someone's gonna flip out and do something nuts to hurt a kid.

We have to cover our asses. Bottom line. WE aren't happy about it. It makes me sick to my stomach and sad that we have to do shit like that at school now. Our happy little world is just fucked up because of stupid things that sick people do these days. If the school resource officer HAD used the taser on you, or knocked you to the floor and cuffed you, then I'd be singin' a different tune... LOL, honest I would! I'd SO be on your side. I'm not NOT on your side today either, but I'm just tryin' to let you know how tied our hands are in the schools now.

Several things could have been done differently. The resource officer could have asked one of the secretaries/deans/administrators to call over to the elementary school where this girl's mom was working and just get quick permission for you to be there and that all could have been avoided. You wouldn't be furious, the girl would have had a nice birthday treat from a family friend and all would still be right with the world.

Unfortunately, they were all just doing what they've been TOLD to do. DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. DOES NOT MAKE IT GOOD. DOES NOT MAKE IT FUN. It SHOULD piss us off. It SHOULD make us sick to our stomachs. :puke: It SHOULD make us sad.

That's all. I know I don't post often, but you can look and see that I'm not some troll and I've been around DU for several years now. I'll stand over here in the corner and hope that I don't get rocks thrown at me or have my tires slashed in the parking lot.

108. What you say makes perfect sense, HOWEVER.
This is a brand new school. It has pulled from several overcrowded middle schools and therefore, it is new to everyone. Unlike when the high school opened two years ago, there are kids and parents at this new school who are being pulled from feeder patterns very different from the ones we've been used to.

It is extremely, extremely common in the feeder schools in the pattern I'm in, to bring lunches to kids. I would guess it is common in the others as well, but I don't know. I DO know, that the school the Principal came from welcomed parents to eat with their kids anytime they wanted.

That being said, IF this truly is a rule, they need to let people know. They certainly let us know when they want something. Put it in the first day of school packet that is 1000 pages long.

And, the cop didn't need to be such a dick. Seriously. It was a total abuse of his 'power'.

112. That cop was a lazy dbag
All he had to do was to call a dean and/or the front desk person and the scene would have been avoided. My mom's a high school teacher and more than half the cops that have worked at her school could care less about their job and contributing to the school they're working at, which is sad. School cops are usually just a step above mall cop.

Adults in general can't come into the school without being questioned and being authorized to see the kids they request to see.

121. All this crap started back after Columbine!
When my older son was in high school, he was often there late because of Science Olympiad, yearbook, stage crew etc. I could walk in, find a janitor and they always knew who was in the building, where they were and what they were doing. When I was working late, my son would sometimes take his then 5 year old sister into the weight room with him, put her on a stair stepper and do his exercises for gymnastics.

A few years later, she was in school with a weekly doctor's appointment. I would leave my job, drive like a bat out of hell to the school, turn around and drive another 30 miles to make the appointment. Every week, I had to stand in line, sign in at the door, proceed into the office which was right next to the door, sign in there, ask for my daughter, sign her out, sign myself out, and finally sign myself out again at the door. No one ever asked me for any ID, but no one ever recognized me, either! By the end of the year, I was signing myself in as Christopher Columbus and Brenda Starr!

BTW - the last time I had to pick up my daughter at the high school, I had to sign in there and then engage ina 10 minute negotiation to go upstairs and get her since the door guard maintained that everyone had gone home! I really miss the janitors!

I went to have lunch with some friends who were still in school, and the principal (who knew me, btw, and had been nice to me while I was still in school) came and told me that I had to leave or they would call the police. I was like, " :wtf: , I graduated from this school like six months ago!"

128. I'm not reading all those above posts, but....
I'm amazed that the school secretary let you beyond the office. She should have called the girl down from the cafeteria to meet you in the office. That is where the security breach was. Officer BD was the one who was doing his job.

Schools are not the places you remember. We are in total lock-down now. Only the front door opens to "visitors" and you have to get buzzed in, after being identified on the monitor. Since the school shootings in the 90s, schools are almost impenetrable today.

It's just a fact of life.

I've visited large public schools (my high school had 3,500 kids) I attended, and all the ones I visit all you need to do is tell the person at the front door where you're going, what you're doing, and if you're a visitor. You head to the main office if you are a visitor and get a sticker to put on your shirt if you're there for a valid reason.

Question answered in post #52

If you're on the contact card, why didn't you mention it it BD?

----------------original msg--------------
Have you been cleared via a background check to be in the school?

Does anyone besides the student you visited know you there?

Do you want other adults, most of whom you do not know anything about, mingling with your children in the cafeteria? There was a poster in the Education Forum who complained of a man who came to "visit" his kid and several girls at lunch, and it involved inappropriate behavior.

Surely you can see the other side of the argument here.

139. I didn't think about it, honestly. It never occurred to me
until hedges mentioned it here.

And, statistics bear out the fact that schools who have lots of parental involvement and presence have lower rates of drug and alcohol usage, as well as other potentially dangerous behaviors.

Honestly, I can't see the other side. There is a sign on the door that says "Visitors must report to the main office". I followed all the rules that I am familiar with in this county.

And, two other principals at two different schools, including the one that my kids attended previous to the opening of this new one, were appalled.

I guess there's a roving band of middle aged moms luring kids with fast food that we need to be worried about.

137. It's easy to see both sides of this. Most people at DU who know Midlo would be thrilled to have her
in our schools.

If our schools had more Midlos, life in general would be a far better place.

I just don't get the part where you signed-in, explained yourself, got your hall-pass and were free to proceed to the lunchroom.

I'm guessing the security officer was seekritly jealous of the taco. He was starving.

I still can't believe it. I heard from Annie last night, and THANK GOD, she wasn't upset about it. I was worried that she would blame herself.

But, the more I thought about it, the more pissed off I got. That BD was an asshole. When I got pulled over for speeding back in April, after actually committing a crime, mind you, the cop was very pleasant to me and was even laughing when I joked with him.

I guess there's a roving bad of moms bringing fast food to kids that is fast becoming a danger to society.

144.  I think the cop may have had good intentions. That having been said....
Edited on Sat Sep-06-08 11:45 AM by socialdemocrat1981
I cannot see where you violated any safety regulations/requirements. You had the permission of the girl’s mother to be there (and I’m sure a call to the girl’s mother as you suggested would have verified that), you were listed as that girl’s potential contact in the event of an emergency and, furthermore, when that girl saw you, she actually came to you and hugged you and led you to her table. That clearly indicated she knew you and was comfortable with you and WANTED you to come and have lunch with her. When I was young, it was not uncommon for parents and the friends of their children to intermingle on school premises.

If you had attempted to leave the premises with her without parental permission, then maybe the cop would have had a valid point. But you were sitting there having lunch with a person who clearly expressed through her body language that she was comfortable with you in a very public setting where the safety of that child could be watched by teachers and the cop –not to mention the other students

I can understand the school’s obsession with security and protection of the child and I can understand that the cop may have preferred to err on the side of caution when dealing with the situation. But you have to strike a delicate balance between taking precautions to enforce security and child protection and infringing on the rights and freedoms of a child in a school environment. The cop needs to be aware that he is in a school environment –where it is not unusual for children and parents to intermingle and where parents are an integral part of the school community –and adjust his behavior accordingly. The school authorities do need to be vigilant but they also need to take into account that there are some cases where special circumstances are warranted and show some leniency if it is going to bring some enjoyment to a child's life

I think the cop probably used the wrong strategy here –in his position I would probably have investigated the situation (i.e. called the parents, checked with the school authorities and talked to the girl and made sure that everything was OK) instead of taking unilateral action and throwing you out. I think the cop overreacted

146. Exactly.
And as one of my friends said, at Orientation, rather than the principal introducing everyone on down to the custodians, how about announcing these new rules to the captive audience?

I told the cop that I could understand this if the child was 5, and he admitted that he saw her run up to me and hug me. At that point I asked him if he thought perhaps she was expecting me?

And, he was such an asshole about it. I mean, c'mon. Are roving fast food delivering moms in minivans seriously THAT much of an issue? :wtf:

Pfft. Tryin' to give a kid a birthday present and a little happiness for the day. Don't you know school is a place to terrorize children and make them miserable? What next? You gonna show up and bring your own kid's jacket if they forget it on the first cool day? What kind of parent and friend are you? Doing something nice for the kid like that....I'm surprised they let you within a thousand feet of a school. :sarcasm:

Children are supposed to be beaten to within an inch of their lives every day at school and twice on the first and last days of school and terrorized by staff all day every day for as long as they are under the age of 16. Happiness is not allowed in school, don'cha know?
