I have an unkillable, zombie goldfish!
One of my goldfish has been floating upside down for weeks, but will not die. It just lounges around the tank upside down; I think it has a gas bladder or digestive problem. I've taken to calling him Bobber.

I felt bad about his situation, and decided to put him out of his misery as humanely as possible, which according to Petsmart was to place him in a glass of water and put it in the freezer.

I had that little bugger in there a full hour until there was an inch of solid ice over him, but when I broke the ice he was still swimming around. I felt bad so I put him back in the tank.

Now, his gas problem seems to be solved. He still lays on the bottom a lot, but he's upright now, and he swims normally at feeding time. Woohoo!

1. Wow. Who knew the deep freeze could cure that?
I had a fish with a severe swim bladder problem. S/he was just wriggling around for weeks and weeks. It was pathetic. Finally, I couldn't stand it any more. I confess, DU, I committed fishicide. I wrapped her/him in a dish towel and whacked it on the table. I wanted to make sure that that poor fish was out of its misery and not just stunned, so I whacked it a few more times. Big mistake. Let's just say the fish was definitely sufficiently dead, and not just pinin' for the fjords.

2. I'm wondering if I squeezed him a bit while taking him out of the tank
Maybe I "uncorked" whatever was causing the gas blockage?

3. Could be.
They say a light pressure on babies' abdomens sometimes helps with colic...similar concept. :)

5. If it was a bacterial infection the cold probably helped suppress it.
That might have given "Bobber's" immune system a chance to get a handle on it.
