1. People who need to Fake Good Breeding
"The Rules" began back in the Victorian era, I believe, when more middle-class people could afford a grander lifestyle due to the Industrial Revolution. Snobbery of the haves/have nots, became pretty competitive.

As for the linen rule, that's pretty dumb. If you're in a hot/subtropic climate, say Missississippi, where the temps are still high in October, and beyond, wearing linen, a great breathable fabric, would be a sensible article of clothing to wear.

Does your sis like to "Fake Good Breeding"? Not a put down...am just wondering...?

Only rule I know about linen is...ladies should wear undergarments under their linen dresses and pants.

3. Actually, it's don't wear WHITE after Labor Day
regardless of fabric.

But for a lot of us, early fall/autumn is just like summer, so why the fuck wouldn't you wear a comfortable fabric like linen?

8. I've never heard that one. I've only heard "Don't wear white after Labor Day".
I've not heard anything about restricting one's fabric types.

12. Well, of course not - you have manners. Unlike someone else, I should say.
I won't say names, because it's impolite, but I'm sure you know who I'm talking about.

26. Yeah... I find myself purposely wearing the opposite colors of shoes v. purses
Once, a supervisor at work asked me, "Don't you have a black purse?" I knew what she was getting at & said, "Yes, I do... I used it all winter." She didn't know what to say to me then! :D

27. Was your supervisor petty enough? Do you suppose she ever stopped to consider
that she should have been paying attention to the quality of your WORK, rather than to your level of dress and accessories?

I suppose not. If those things didn't actually happen in the American workplace, "Dilbert" wouldn't be such a popular cartoon.

29. Also, "never brown when in town."
Brown is a "country color" and should not be worn in town, lest the wearer wish to be mistaken for a yokel.

Hmmm, perhaps this should be updated to read "never farm-equipment-manufacturer baseball cap and 'my other shirt is a wifebeater' T-shirt when in town."

30. Interesting
Never heard the brown thing. Wondered, though, why my mother tried (unsuccessfully) to make me stop wearing brown when I was in high school. hmm.

I must update the "brown-ness" of my wardrobe immediately! :hi:

you wouldn't not wear linen after Labor Day-it's way too hot to switch to wool.

34. Hey, I've been wearing wool socks, at work, all summer!
They make me sit where it's freezing cold. Then, of course, at the end of the day when I walk outside, it's like Astronaut training! lol
