Who here has never had "chicken Pox"
My "Who has never broken a bone" thread made me think of this one. I am olding(practicaly as we speak) and I still have never experienced the "chicken Pox". At this point, I am rather hoping not to, as I hear that as you get older, getting it is worse and worse.

Who else is Pox Free?

1. As I told my mother when I was three, I didn't have the chicken pox, I had bird pecks.
I was in the back yard at Nathan's and a whole flock of birds flew down and pecked me, which is why I had spots.

My sister and Nathan and his sister Julie, on the other hand, just had plain old chicken pox at the same time. It was an odd coincidence that it occurred at the same time as my freak avian assault.

3. My sister had them
And I had to stay home with her a whole week, to try to make me catch them. They did the same thing when a friend had them. I basically lived at his house the week he was out of school. He had better toys than I did, but boy was all his itching annoying.

5. You should have a titer done- you're probably immune.
If you're not, you should definitely look into getting the shot, because they're no joke for an adult.

6. I have heard tell of this shot
Back when I had health insurance, I think it was fairly new, and I couldnt get a Dr to take my request seriously.

Now, I fear the cost. Just getting in to see a Dr is a cost I dare not pay unless it is terribly urgent.

8. You should be able to get it done through your county health department.

Student loans mean that I do not qualify for any means tested program, but cannot afford any non means tested program.

14. I would just strenuously echo LeftyMom's suggestion.
I had The Pox at the ripe old age of thirty (my mother has never had them despite repeated exposures) and it sucked so very badly that I really do tell everyone to go get the titer drawn, just to be sure. No lab fees can be as outrageous as the time off work and serious pain and suffering The Pox bringeth.

17. When they are the difference between
Rent and not, those lab fees can be pretty outrageous. As soon as I can, I may. But as I remember back, the last I heard the vaccine was still a bit questionable.

Now, I know it is not at all the same thing biologically, but I doubt my luck if there is any question. I am the guy who has gotten the flu every time I get a flu shot. Not later in the season, later in the day.

27. I wouldn't get a flu shot at gunpoint.
But I would try to make the funds and time to get a varicella titer drawn and get the vax if you're able. :)

25. I'd third it.
I had it at 17 and I missed a month of school and was miserable, so I can't imagine how bad it would be now if I hadn't. My brother had it when we were young (he was 7 and I was 8), so they thought for years I was immune because of that exposure. Nope.

4. I tried to catch it as a kid, and only got one pock
I caught it again as an adult, and only popped out maybe 2 or 3 pox. I caught again as an adult, and caught maybe, 2 pox.

7. I've never had it.
Been exposed numerous times.

I've also never had a cold sore, despite being married to a man who gets them frequently.

I was exposed to herpes in my wild youth and didn't come down with it.

I have come to the conclusion that I am naturally immune to herpes-family viruses. If some evil person releases small pox on the world, I'll be the only one left alive and unscarred. :-)

9. My mom is 64
and has never had chicken pox. I had it when I was 20 and thought I was going to die. I have never been so sick, but the doctor said I had a "relatively mild" adult case.

10. Every kid in my neighborhood got them....
...except me. Musta been more than a dozen kids, including my two sisters. The parents kept putting together those little disease catching slumber parties. And I went to every one of them,, maybe five or six sleepovers at different pads, but I never did catch them. Years later, someone tried to tell me I really did catch them but I was just a carrier. I ain't buyin' it.

11. My son...age 39...
He went ahead and got that experimental vaccine about 6 years ago. The doctor told
him there is no guarantee that he won't get Chicken Pox someday...the vaccine is too new
and they don't have enough years behind it to know.

I tried to expose him gently to Chicken Pox when he was a little guy...just didn't catch them.

15. Oh, jeez, I get all itchy just thinking about it.
I got chicken pox when I was about 5 or 6 and I still remember my mom painting me with calamine lotion because I had the damn things all over and they ITCHED.

Try not to get chicken pox. An adult has more surface area to get them on.

21. Wow
Ugly.

When I was younger, my family volunteered regularly at a mens shelter. One of the men caught Chicken pox. I remember they were very concerned that he might not survive.

I think their experience would have been similar to mine. And yes, Chicken Pox CAN KILL.

22. I had it tenth grade and I was out of school for 2 weeks
I should have stayed out a bit longer though to rest. I gave them to my brother who was in ninth grade, and he was out for 3 weeks.

I thought I had the fucking bubonic plague, but god bless benadryl naps and mass amounts of tv.

28. I'm nearly 62 and if I ever had them it was such a mild case that nobody noticed.
My sister had them when we were quite young and shared a bed. I nursed all 4 of my kids through them and have been around countless others who had chicken pox, but I apparently avoided catching them.

Luckily it was just over one small area on my back, so it wasn't too bad. If you haven't gotten them yet, maybe you'll be lucky!

It was not fun, except that I got to open my big present early, which was the GI Joe space capsule, complete with GI Joe in Astronaut gear.
