Someone tried to break into my house last night :(
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 09:54 PM by Faye
I went out last night around 9:30, came home around 3am. I was drunk when I got home though, so I didn't notice. But this morning when I got up to go somewhere, my back door (which is really the only one we use) had 2 holes etched in it, right where the deadbolt is. They tried to pry the door open, which obviously didn't work, then it looks like they were trying to cut through the door to get to the deadbolt and push it over, or something. I am so scared now :scared: I don't really have much to steal, unless they plan on carrying a huge TV out the door, or kids' toys, or my computer, which they would have to spend time unplugging. I am poor, don't keep money in the house, so they were really wasting their time.

I am just really scared they might try to come back :( My friend said he didn't think they would, he said they probably figure if they tried and failed, and made it obvious they tried, they wouldn't try again at the same house. I hope he is right. I really don't care about them taking anything as much as I care about them hurting me or my daughter :( This is one thing that sucks living alone. I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight.

I am going to file a report tomorrow with the police - I think it will make me feel safer. I would think whoever it was probably tried to break into other houses since they were unsuccessful at mine.

Please comfort me :scared:

1. Don't worry. If they failed once, it's unlikely they'll be back unless they are a VERY dumb criminal
but here's a hug  and best wishes.

5. I'm sure you'll be okay. Leave some lights on, maybe.
Some signs that there is somebody home. That might give you greater peace of mind.

6. it's funny you should say that...
because the main lights in my apt. are out, and I ran out of lightbulbs. So just my bedroom, kitchen, and daughter's room work. Guess I need to buy some lightbulbs tomorrow then.

7. I always leave a bathroom light on when I leave.
I read that B&E guys skip houses where the bathroom
light is on, because it's the one room in the house
that signals occupancy, and people are likely to have
lights on there at any time during the night....

2. About 10 years ago my house was broken into while I was out
and my stereo and wedding sterling were stolen. It seriously freaked me out, to the point where I slept on the living room couch with all the lights on, clutching a shotgun, for about a week. What finally made me feel better was getting really heavy-duty deadbolt locks and some timers to turn lights on at odd times. Eventually I got an alarm system.

It's very doubtful that you are in any actual danger, but having your house broken into, or even the attempt, is very psychologically disturbing because it makes you feel vulnerable and unsafe in your own house. File the police report right away, and then get whatever kind of security system you can afford, even if it's just some motion-sensitive lights. That will help your peace of mind a lot.

9. I'm sorry this happened to you
It feels like a huge violation, and it scary beyond words.

I had someone break into my place at night (I was still a teen and living with my parents) and woke up to his voice. He did no harm, and left quickly, but I couldn't sleep for about 2 weeks after the incident, and kept a baseball bat by my bed for years.

It's normal to be scared; it's a terrible shock. Keep the light on, for sure. Do whatever you need to feel safe again.

11. ok, I feel a little better...
I put a bunch of stuff in front of my bedroom window because I keep thinking they are peeking in at me lol. I have the kitchen light on, my daughter's room light on (even though she's not here tonight), left the TV on in the living room. I feel a little better, but I'm still scared. What is the most scary about this, is that my car WAS in the driveway when it happened. I walked to where I was going. So what if I was in here sleeping with the lights off? They would have come in while I was sleeping? :scared:

12. I recommend buying a shotgun and learning how to safely use it to defend yourself.

13. Go out and rescue a dog...older dogs are a great choice.
They are calm, adaptive, and need a 'forever home' for 3-7 years.

Dogs are the best home security system available - their barking alone will deter 95% of thieves. They will also give you unconditional love.

14. Yes, a dog is the answer and make sure it is a big dog.
I live alone and I have a Rottweiler, which is a deterrent to any would-be thieves. Unfortunately, she will soon be 11 years old and pretty much at the end of her lifespan. When she passes, I will definitely be buying a gun.

16. I once had someone try and break into my apartment about 1 hour after
I turned out the light. My cat warned me something was up. I called out to her and thought 'that is odd, I've left a light on somewhere'. Seems the light "left on" was from the hallway outside and the door to my apartment was ajar but still had the chain on. I didn't notice this part or realize someone had been trying to break in until I woke up the next morning. Was really scary cause at the time I had a psychopath messing with my life. It didn't happen again for which I am grateful.
