1. My dear bertha!
I was thinking I didn't have any wildlife pics...

But then I remembered my trip to the Laguna Coast Wilderness Park!

How do you like this little fellow?

I call him the Lizard King!

25. I've known people who don't care for butterflies
They probably don't like moths either, though I can't remember them saying one way or the other.

I think that, for them, it's something about the weird, chaotic bounce of the butterflies' flight pattern. Creeps them out, or something.

39. I think that was 3 litters and a couple of mama cats. There were four more
blackies on the steps and a couple running around the patio too. That was a banner year for the Black Cat at the Official Purveyor of Grain Bin Cats to Thompson Farms.

Usually about once a year, my nephew bags up a bunch of them and takes them up to Thompson Farms to live there and kill the rats and mice that get in the grain.

My youngest sister and her husband have this farm. My other sister and I were cracking up over all the black kitties.

48. yes, I pulled into that picnic/restroom stop in TR Natl park, and when I
drove around the curve, there was this herd of bison, crowded around the restroom building. I sort of picked my way through them in the van, parked and stepped very slowly into the building. You just never know with bison, and since there were young ones in the group I had to be very careful. They sort of stood there and watched me like "Stoopid human, thinks we are going to run over her"

If you ever get a chance to go up to North Dakota to the Thedore Roosevelt Park, do it.

and you are welcome, how's the job thing going? I had a good interview yesterday!

Do mantises have eyelids? Looks like your guy is blinking.

60. I don't think they have eyelids, but they have five eyes.
I read that the black dot in their multi-faceted compound eyes reflect right back at you, regardless of your position relative to the creature.

All of my mantis pictures seem to support this.

65. they have air-filled tissues behind each facet...
...part of their respiratory tracheal system. The air-water interface in the network of tiny tubules is silvery shimmery, so it reflects light back up toward the photoreceptors in their eyes-- to increase light sensitivity-- and coincidentally, back at you, since some facets are almost always pointing at you if you can see the compound eyes.
