2. I never thought about pronouncing it that way, but that was funny. I figured it would be
pronounced "Know-shawn," but pronouncing it like "notion" would make more sense in terms of illiterate parents.

Like that basketball player named Anferny (I shit you not) Hardaway. Was that a parent too harelipped or too stupid to pronounce the name "Anthony" to the hospital staff, or what?

3. Weird kid names.
In my friend's 1st grade class, there was a little girl names Cozmel. She has a brother named Cayman.

You guessed it. It's where they were each conceived. :puke: Talk about TMI.

6. You want to see REALLY bad names people inflict on their kids? Go here:

She's compiled an absolutely hilarious list, AND with commentary.

25. His parents knew a Cayman is an animal, similar to crocodiles and alligators, right?
...never mind, don't answer that.

Poor kid.

4. I could name worse, but
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 08:55 PM by Zavulon
I am not in the mood to be called a racist today, as I'm sure you will be soon for your OP. If a funny-sounding or funny-spelled name belongs to a minority, you automatically become a racist for paying any attention to the name or the spelling thereof, as I found out recently.

This came up because of a Colts (I believe) player named Craphonzo Thorpe. I merely pointed out that an 'f' would have been a better idea in the spelling of that name than the 'ph,' and boom - suddenly I was a racist.

7. Well, being that I'm only half-white myself, and am married to a woman who's half-African,
anyone who wants to call me a racist is in for a hell of a fight, and a fight that I'm not afraid of fighting.

But I understand your point. I do.

15. I've seen worse.
I volunteered for a while with an organization that helps teenage mothers finish school, and clearly some of the names I saw (mothers and kids alike) had been beamed into people's heads by aliens.

And stupid names definitely cross all racial boundaries.

I restate LM's rule of naming: if you can't picture a name on a campaign sign or bank president's business card, don't use it.

16. Well-said, that. I remember that you posted about those dumb names before, and
I admire you for being able to restrain yourself from asking those mothers "What the FUCK were you thinking? Don't you understand that your child has to LIVE with than name?"

18. Ever read "Freakonomics"?
It deals with "freak" occurrences in society, and one chapter is devoted to odd names given to children.

One incident mentioned was when a judge presided over a case involving a young girl with the name "Temptress." The judge halted the session and asked the mother why she named her daughter that, and the mother said she was a fan of the actress who played Vanessa on "The Cosby Show."

Problem is, that actress' name is "Tempestt."

28. That totally happened in one of my classes too.
There was a three year old girl and her English name was "Passion". I asked her mother why she picked that name (which isn't horrible but is a little bizarre for a three year old.) She said she was naming her after "Patience" a bit character on Sex and the City.

I just don't find names like Knowshon any more annoying than Madison or Dakota or other yuppie bullshit names (okay, the ones that use a 'Y' in place of damn near every vowel get my goat, it's true)
