6. I've lived in Oakland (17th & Webster, above the Happy Burrito) and let me tell you....
the folks in the roughest parts of Oakland wouldn't last 20 minutes in:

a) South Philly
b) Various neighborhoods in Baltimore
c) Damn near anywhere in Detroit
d) The Overtown or Liberty City neighborhoods in Miami
e) Belle Glade, FL

..and Oakland is nicer now than when I lived there in the 80s.

9. The number of murders is still insanely high, though, for a city of only 400,000.
I have friends who live around 25th and MLK, and they've seen gunshot victims bleeding on the ground, practically on their doorstep. :-(

And as for Richmond, the situation was so bad during the summer of '05 that they considered calling in the National Guard.

Not that I'm in much danger from any of this, though, seeing as how I'm safe and sound in El Sobrante. Who says the suburbs are all bad?

20. I do realize Richmond and Oakland have issues
However, it was funny going down Broadway with white, suburban students talking about how "rough" it was. Having grown up making regular trips into Baltimore and DC, I had to chuckle.

I had few problems in Oakland other than being burglarized by the world's dumbest thief. (he stole my roommate's bike in favor of far more valuable stuff; when he came back for more stuff, he was caught, and the bike was found in his apartment).

52. I got mugged in Camden in March of 2006
coming out of the Rutgers Law Library.

Usually there are cops around, but I didn't see any....so I took a look around, walked across the street to the lot, got to my car and was putting the key in the lock when I felt something sharp pointing into the small of my back.

Obviously, I survived - but I haven't been there since.

every time i go up there (which is frequently) i have to listen to claims that they have more of the good old lashings of ultra violence than new orleans

puh-lease

yes, you should use common sense there but the good folk of memphis take more pride in their crime rate than is strictly warranted in my humble view

Other towns will cut you, but the District of Columbia eats your soul, and makes you watch, and smile all the while.

L.A. is probably the runner-up, for similar reasons.
