They are Satan's minions and the TRUE symbol of evil. Once believed to be the work of dragons, Bears (like purple donkeys) enjoy running around the woods molesting and raping innocent people and squids.

And more than that, note the way the bear hung onto the guy and wouldn't let go until it was finally dead. Just like you say, there must have been something wrong with that bear.
