21. The Russians.
The Russian people are amazing. They're brave, tough, stoic. They are patriotic in a way we can't even begin to imagine. Despite their reputation for being a dour, unsmiling people, I've known a number of recent Russian immigrants who had a wonderful, if very, very dry, sense of humour. The Russians are a great people who are the way they are from having to endure 500 years of really awful leadership.

41. First of all, their music, both classical and folk
and their dancing, both ballet and folk.

I also like a lot of their literature, and their language is fascinating, too, although difficult.

The Russian Orthodox Church has a deep spirituality and beautiful rituals, although they can get legalistic.

Much of their food is very, very good.

Russia has produced some fine anti-authoritarians: Bakunin pushed the frontier forward quite a bit. But Prince Kropotkin, who voluntarily renounced considerable privilege and dedicated his life to the pursuit of liberty for all is one of my favorite-est heroes of all.

61. The looks on the faces in the crowd during Paul McCartney's "In Red Square" concert
In the U.S., if we want to go to a concert, we buy the tickets and go...just one more thing that we can do freely, without giving it a second thought.

I prefer the "Live In St. Petersburg" bonus concert on the DVD, primarily because it features a pretty cool version of "Back In The USSR," but the whole DVD is worth owning. McCartney catches a lot of crap for filming the audience during his concert films, but on this one, it's the high point. Pure, unrestrained joy on face after face after face.
