Pink Floyd founder Richard Wright dies......
Edited on Mon Sep-15-08 11:14 AM by Bennyboy
Pink Floyd keyboard player and founder member Richard Wright has died at the age of 65 after battling cancer, his spokesman has said.

The group released their first record in 1967 with Wright appearing alongside lead guitarist Syd Barrett, Roger Waters and Nick Mason.

Dave Gilmour joined the band at the start of 1968 while Barrett left the group shortly afterwards.

Wright penned songs on albums including Dark Side Of The Moon.

1. Man that sucks....he was awesome
Of course, his contributed so much to the original sound of Pink Floyd. So sad..and after "a short battle with cancer"
I wonder what happened?

I was lucky enough to see them 3 times when they got back together in the late 80's and 90's.

2. Oh, my!! This is truly tragic, indeed! And a total surprise!

He was a kind and gentle guy, and a wonderful musician.

And now, no hope at all of a Pink Floyd reunion. Though perhaps the other three will come together for a memorial tour - that would totally be awesome!

But I am sad, indeed.

Richard Wright: 1943-2008

Founding Pink Floyd member Richard Wright has died at the age of 65. The keyboardist’s spokesman told the BBC Wright had been battling cancer for some time.

Wright co-founded Pink Floyd in 1965 with guitarist Syd Barrett, bassist Roger Waters and drummer Nick Mason. Though Wright sang lead on several early Pink Floyd compositions, his role was mostly supportive, coloring psychedelic epics like "Breathe," "Time, "Echoes" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” He also wrote or co-wrote a number if key Floyd tracks, including "The Great Gig in the Sky" and "Us and Them."

Wright found himself butting heads with Waters as the bassist increased his grip over the group and resigned as fulltime member of Pink Floyd while recording The Wall. He continued to tour with the group as a salaried backing musician through 1981, but does not appear on 1983’s The Final Cut. Wright rejoined the group fulltime in time to record 1987’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason, the first Pink Floyd record not to feature Waters. Under the leadership of Gilmour, Wright contributed heavily to latter day Floyd records like The Delicate Sound of Thunder and The Division Bell, as well as the live album P*U*L*S*E. In 2005, he reunited with Gilmour, Waters and Mason for a one-off Pink Floyd performance at Live 8.

Wright has released a handful of studio albums outside of Pink Floyd, including 1978’s Wet Dream and 1996’s Broken China, the latter of which features Sinéad O'Connor, among others. He also released a collaborative effort with Dave Fashion’s Harris under the moniker Zee in 1984. In addition, Wright appeared on Gilmour’s 2006 album On an Island and the album’s subsequent tour.

Only last week Gilmour made headlines by saying that “he never again take part in a Pink Floyd reunion.” Founding

4. Didn't know about that one-time reunion
From Wikipedia:

The classic line up of the legendary progressive rock band Pink Floyd (Roger Waters, David Gilmour, Richard Wright and Nick Mason) played together on stage for the first time in 24 years. The band performed the songs "Speak to Me", "Breathe", "Money", "Wish You Were Here" and "Comfortably Numb".

They were the only band not to be verbally introduced, instead the house and stage lights were darkened while the introduction to "Speak To Me" was played accompanied, on the video screens, by an animated version of the heart monitor graphic from the Dark Side of the Moon sleeve.

9. Damn! RIP Richard.
I always considered Rick to be the easy-going Floyd-member who felt Roger Waters' dictatorial lash perhaps more than the rest. He was a passive target for Roger's venom.

16. Another one of the greats gone
He was a tasteful, textural player, especially on Hammond. I sometimes borrow from his vocabulary, so to speak.

I'm saddened that he's gone. :( God speed Rick, and thank you for the music.
