My daughter's homework is KILLING me.
Here we go again.

The work that "needs" to be done at home is friggin ridiculous. There is NO WAY the homework at K's grade level should take more than 20 minutes a day. The past two weeks, the homework has averaged 60 minutes to do. Granted a lot of it is writing intensive, and requires some time for thinking, but still. 60 minutes. Not including the 20 minutes of required reading per day.

This is going to be a loooooonnnng year.

1. If I'm not mistaken, the guideline is ten minutes per grade maximum.
Which means that seniors should average no more than two hours per night. Honestly, an elementary schooler shouldn't have much of anything to do at home except for the occasional special project and work they didn't have time to finish in class. They need time to have a childhood, play, spend time with family and get to bed at a reasonable hour.

Either her teachers have unreasonable expectations or they are managing their time badly- because not only is it inappropriate to send that much work home, there shouldn't be any need.

I would put my foot down.

2. Actually I think it is because the classroom time is too short
In Minnesota, elementary schools are in session between 6.25 and 6.5 hours per day. Here the school is in session 5.75 hours four days a week and 4.75 hours one day per week.

Makes me absolutely crazy.

6. Put it back into the school's lap. Bitch and complain. It worked in our town.
They jumped on that "WAY too much homework" trend a few years ago, but backed off after a revolt by the parents.

After all, are ADULTS expected to work all day, then work ANOTHER three hours at home, in the evening?

No. So why should kids be expected to do so?

8. When I was in fifth grade, I was put into a "gifted" class that was
stimulating in many ways but had tons of homework every night.

My parents, having been trained as old-fashioned elementary school teachers, could tell that I was stressing out, so the following year, they put me into a regular sixth grade. This class allowed us to move at our own pace in some subjects, so I wasn't bored, and I could relax in the evening.

homework . (Calc III , Vector Calc, ODE's)

Plus I plan to give them very tough exams.... let's see how many of them will drop or change majors within the first months.
