(for the under-40 crowd) BARNABAS COLLINS LIVES

Those of you under 40 yrs. old here most likely do not remember the late-60s afternoon gothic soap opera series, "Dark Shadows." For those of us as young as 4 or 5 during that time, high school kids, and just about everyone alive, Dark Shadows was a very big deal. You can read about Dark Shadows on Wikipedia, and hopefully get a sense of how unique it was - and still is, in my opinion!

Barnabas, the main vampire of the series will be revived next year in a movie starring Johnny Depp and directed by Tim Burton.

Other general comments about the show -- included were seances, time travel, werewolves, witches, ghosts....and anything else you could imagine.

Some cool links to give you a sense of the old show:

FOR THOSE OF US WHO WERE ALIVE THEN, WE WILL NEVER FORGET BARNABAS!

1. I'm not sure if this news makes me happy or not
I used to love, love, love Dark Shadows. It was on at 3pm where I live and I would run home from grade-school everyday because my high-school age brother would be watching it. I wasn't supposed to because I was too little and apparently my mother knew what she was talking about because I was convinced for awhile that Barnabas resided under my bed. LOL

I'm just afraid that they will ruin my great memories of the show.

24. Peddle like mad!!
I just to ride my bike home from school and I would peddle like mad to get home in time to see Dark Shadows!!!

The series didn't scare me, but the movies that were in theaters after the series ended gave me a few nightmares!

2. I totally LOVED Dark Shadows.
And as much as I love Depp, I think I'll skip the movie.

3. I was watching the 1990s revival just last night.
It was interesting, because Barnabas was reading Sarah's diary to Willy. I don't remember them being quite so chummy in the original series. (But then it's been a long time since I saw the original series.)

4. That show scared the hell outta me when I was little, and we weren't "supposed" to watch it.
However, our babysitter/housekeeper was hooked on, and since it was on right after school, we got to watch it before mom got home from work. :)

6. There were two kinds of moms in the 60s --
Those who let their kids watch "Dark Shadows" and those who did not. My mom wouldn't let us watch, which was okay because I was so young and even the mention of the show's title freaked me out.

And Depp as Collins - this will be perfect. I hope the movie turns out well.

Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 12:29 PM by Orrex
But a great many people lie about it, for some reason, and they pretend that he's a genius.

I don't even like Big Fish, though I enjoyed Ed Wood quite a bit.

on edit: great sigline image. It's no game!

There can BE no better Holmes after Brett... Arrogant, brilliant, cocaine addict...perfect!

42. Well, he's got the "arrogant" and "cocaine addict" covered, and possibly the "brilliant" as well.
Robert Downey, Jr... Can't wait to see the British reaction to an American playing Sherlock Holmes.

And Jude Law is being considered for Watson. Go figure.

44. It's due in 2010. You'll forget me by then.

Downey is an exceptional actor, and could pull it off. I wonder about Guy Ritchie, though. He's brilliant at shockingly violent humor and at clever plots, but I've never thought of him as the subtle intellectual type that Sherlock Holmes seems to require. Then again, I haven't seen anything from him since "Snatch," so maybe he's improved. I liked "Snatch," but it didn't have a Doyle-esque feel.

38. Ok.. over 40 here. And I was just tellin my teen daughter about Dark Shadows..
and letting her know that the Vampire fad was sooo 1970s. And that it suprised me that no one had revived Dark Shadows yet! And I see it's on its way! Cool. HOpe they don't get too modern and graphic with it.. the charm of it was the darkness, but it was more about the drama not the blood.

39. I LOVED "Dark Shadows" too! I was hoping that you were posting about some sort of reunion, LOL.
A few years ago, my friend heard about a "Dark Shadows" reunion where Jonathan Frid was actually making a rare appearance, but she heard about it after-the-fact... *sigh* :-(

I was hooked on the show as a kid and when my friend lent me his set of tapes, I stayed up until the sun came up, just watching "one more..." :spank:

Of course, I don't remember it being so creaky and such primitive TV, compared to the technology and polish we have now, but I think that was part of its charm, plus the amazing and convoluted storylines which I did manage to follow as a kid.

That being said, I don't think it can be recreated. It will be slick and the charm will be lost. Masterpieces should never be re-made, IMHO...:D

I loved all the characters, but wanted to be Angelique...:loveya:
