Evening II

Morning let you down like a broken promise.
Noon with its bright clothes stood in your way.
Now it is evening, though, your favorite time,
The kiss of the word feeling good in your mouth.

It is sad to think of people you have failed,
Who thought, early on, you lived up to your word,
Who learned their lesson in bed, at play, or at work.
You were only yourself. You promised them nothing.

Perhaps it was death you were hoping to miss,
Like a pothole or slick in the road at night, the human
Complication that comes with being or being with.
Better a crow or a mutt or the ground you stand on.

But you are not evil on the pavement this evening,
And those you harmed have gotten over you fine.
Improved, in fact, by the wake of your departure,
They do better than you could ever imagine.
