I turned vegan recently (2 weeks ago) , so , i have a question
Are the B-12 , B-6 supplements safe ? I checked a couple , and most contain 2000 % to 8000 % of the daily needed value in ONE pill....

Is it safe to imbibe so much b-12 every day.

i do feel weaker right now.

1. How are your dreams?
I had wild and vivid dreams when I was taking B-12.

(Sorry, I don't know what a good dose is!)

3. Your body will store B-12
So if your supplement has some crazy high dosage like that, there's no reason not to take it weekly or something instead of daily.

As an aside, B vitamins tend not to be absorbed well in pills. For supplemental forms, sublingual liquids or pills are supposed to be better, and there's a skin patch out now that a lot of people swear by.

5. Couple of things....
going vegan is best done gradually, reduces cravings for meat.
Often craving for meat , dependent on how vegan you are, is a fat craving.

Once you have been off meat and meat fats for awhile, eating meat and esp. meat fats, even once, will make you really really aware of your digestive system.

After 2 years of no meat, I had family thanksgiving dinner at my Mom's.
That night and the day after were memorable.

Meanwhile, google is a good source for Vegentarian + Vit. B dosage.

7. I can testify to the "really aware of your digestive system" statement.
Believe me!

And nut butters are a good source when you're craving fats.

6. On a related note....
my 17 year old daughter, who had been a vegetarian
for a year, went vegan 3 months ago and is complaining
of hair loss.

Any suggestions for her?

8. Need more info on that.
Any other changes? What's her diet like now in comparison to when she was vegetarian?

Honestly, I'd suggest a good blood workup by her doctor if possible.

12. She takes vitamins now...
eats lots of tempeh and tofu.

She was in India for almost a year, and her hair
started falling out there. The shedding has increased
since she dropped dairy from her diet.

She had full blood workup and physical when she
returned from India two months ago.

13. Have they checked her thyroid?
For a healthy female of childbearing age with hair loss, that'd be my first guess.

9. It's okay.
I'm b12 deficient and can tell you that you're not hurting yourself by taking b12 daily. What the body doesn't use, it will flush out.

16. But then he'd be back to square one...
I mean, I might find the whole vegan thing a bit odd and excessive myself, but I'm not about to judge other people's food preferences. Doesn't have any effect on me, so why should I care?

11. my B-12 supplement is 20,000%
I've been taking it every day for a week now, but I just got some more nutritional yeast, so maybe every week should be more than enough.

and I'm in very good health. My only concern is where it comes from? If the only place to get them is animal flesh, are these supplements animal byproducts?

15. Bacterial action.
Edited on Fri Sep-26-08 06:36 PM by LeftyMom
Animal products have reliable amounts of it due to rot. Non-animal supplements are made via bacteria. Either way, it's made by bacteria.

I've been concerned about this since I started taking B12. I have to take it, otherwise I get terrible anxiety attacks. :scared:
