Evening VI

I am at work here, I am at work there,
Putting both of my best feet forward,
Walking the sidewalks of your city,
Where I linger by the remaining marquees
Behind which you are seated alone,
Or your arm slipped over somebody’s
Shoulder. At fifteen I was with you
In the dark, mistaking elbow for breast;
At thirty having sex in the front row.
When is it that we stop being the show?
The film slips and the audience calls “focus.”

I follow a woman, I follow the couples,
Through the evening streets of barrels and glass,
Wanting to meet the unmet for supper,
Wanting to know how it is with them.
And nobody asks me about my day.
About the pages in my book of days
Where the thumbed sheets riffled in succession
Propel me like a paper cup.
I know one day I will greet myself
On a street, avenue or boulevard,
And we will be wearing our black clothes, as planned.
