FTR: A Vasectomy IS a big deal
Now my lower abdomen is sore, like I did a million crunches last night. The procedure was done Thursday, and it still hurts - now with a dull soreness that affects everything you do.

Apparently this is normal, and will be for the next 5 days or so. Ouch.

Just think if I weren't a desk jockey and did labor - I'd be decommissioned for another week!

4. Free Advice:If you or someone you love is getting snipped
Tell them to get the full anesthetic.

Trust me, one does not want to be awake for that.

6. i didn't do it with full anesthetic
and i survived...wasn't the most fun way to spend a half-hour, but i got through it...

now that it's over, you should just hope it doesn't itch during recovery -- for me that was just as bad...

And, it hurt a lot. Got worse on the third day.

Vasectomies suck. Sure, they're better than the alternative, but they still suck.

40. Geez...
My husband even watched his snipping in the mirror. Doc asked him if he wanted to watch. Hubby said, "What the hell, sure." Granted, you'd have thought he'd had major surgery the way he whined and winced for the next week. I told him to buck up and stop whining. I had an emergency c-section with our son's delivery and lived to tell the tale and he'd be just fine.

5. I'm sure it is!
And I'm sorry you're still hurting.

I think that the "no big deal" sentiment is a statement that compares vasectomy to tubal ligation... and not that it's less painful or any of that, but that it IS much less invasive.

I hope you feel better soon!

Gutted like a fish? No thank you! No one's gutting my wife unless her life depends on it...

But the Vasectomy still sucked!

38. nope. tubal is way easier
I had the tubal asleep, nicely drugged beforehand, woke with no pain at all. It was a laparascopic procedure so the only surgical evidence was a tiny incision inside my belly button and another just above the pubic bone. Like 1/4 inch each. Now if we were talking hysterectomy, that's a long and painful recovery, but a tubal?....pffffft.
Have you considered applying alcohol internally? Ice external, ethanol internal. I'm surprised your doctor didn't mention it. :)

41. Mine wasn't..and I had two of them.
First one was laparoscopy..simple and easy procedure(I was out shopping that afternoon with my then 2 & 4 yr olds and even carried my 4 yr old into the ER when he split his head open that evening) The problem was that my Doc simply didn't do one tube. My son was born 1 yr later.

The second tubal ligation was a bit more invasive with the full bikini line cut and was done the day after my son was born. I was sore but it wasn't all that painful...no more than my episiotomy. If I sneezed or coughed..then yeah it was a big deal for a minute or two.

Back then(30 yrs ago) I'd heard rumors that men walked around feeling like they'd been kicked for two weeks so that's why I had it done instead of DH.

I hope you feel better soon.

36. but they do knock you out for a tubal
and it doesn't hurt afterward. So I'm thinking that vasectomy really is a bigger deal. I did the tubal and pfffft, good drugs and it's done. Next day I'm dancing.

maybe, but open surgery like a tubal is a riskier deal.

I wasn't dancing the day after my tubal.

48. mine wasn't open
It was laparoscopic so except for being blown up with air so they could visualize with the scope, I wouldn't really have known anything happened. Just a tiny incision I could barely even see inside the edge of my belly button and another quarter inch incision just above my pubic bone. Piece of cake. Yours was obviously a different matter altogether.

25. it hurts like hell for a week+ imo
ranging from uncomfortable at best to shooting pains going into your abdomen/torso.

On the bright side, you only have to do it once (compared with friends who get bad cramps) and it's also less painful than childbirth.

And I know the doc says "10 days" but are those 10 real days or just 5 off, and the other 5 really careful?

32. Mileage must vary. I was sore the next day or two, but I was on the
phone, working from home. Just kept changing out the frozen peas.

The weirdest thing about the procedure was looking down toward the doc and seeing a wisp of smoke curl up from my bits and kibble toward the ceiling. "FIRE!"
