I am moving next door, and giving everything away.
Edited on Sun Oct-05-08 10:26 PM by ThomCat
I am moving into the apartment next door for 1 month, and then I am moving back. Then, in December I am moving to Queens to live with a DUer.

The first move is because the foundation in my apartment building has developed cracks and serious problems. Bugs have been coming through and the ground floor has been infested. So the building has been digging up the floors and pouring new concrete, in stages from one end of the building to the other. I live on the ground floor, and I'm at the end of the hall.

I'm moving into the building they just finished renovating. It has wooden tile floors over the new concrete. The apartment has been fully renovated and is beautiful. But it's a 1 bedroom apartment and I'm moving out of a 2 bedroom apartment. So it will be cramped for a the 4 weeks I'll be there.

14 friends came over this weekend to help me pack up everything I own. It has been absolutely amazing! :grouphug:

While I am packing I am trying to give away almost everything I own. I can't use most of it anymore because of the loss of the use of my hands. And when I move to Queens I'll be moving into a friend's furnished apartment so I only need what will fit into my own room.

So almost everything has to go. Half of my kitchen has been given away. Half of my furniture is also either gone or at least claimed. Canes and walking sticks, books, appliances, tools, art. It is all either gone or going. Anything that is left at the end of the week is going to Housing Works if they can come out here to get it.

I still have a queen size sofa bed, a 27" tv, and a 62"x 30" metal 5-drawer desk to give away if anyone wants to come and get them. :)

1. My dear ThomCat!
Wow, what a procedure!

I hope it all goes very smoothly, and that you're comfortable in your temporary new digs!

Please take care, sweetie, and I look forward to talking to you, hopefully tomorrow!

3. Tomorrow should be a calm evening
if everything goes well. I should have time to rest, recover, and talk on the phone. :)

I don't have plans to do anything else.

I've pushed myself too hard and abused myself too hard this weekend. My friends kept threatening to tape me to a chair to get me to stop so that I wouldn't hurt myself. But it was my stuff they were packing, so I couldn't have them doing all the work without me.

So I'll spend the next few days recovering. :)

5. Sounds like a plan!
I'm normally available around this time, if it's not too late for you...

Recovering is a good thing!

2. I wish we had a way to NYC. We could use the sofa bed.
Our sofa is, well, falling apart. Kids bouncing on it can do that.

It's good of you to help other people, and I hope everything works out for you sweetness.

 :loveya:

9. I would absolutely love to give it to you
if I had a way to get it there. It's a Pier 1 sofa bed, and it has held up beautifully.

As a sofa it's the size of a twin size bed, so it's a deep sofa, which is perfect for lounging. It folds opens into a queen size bed. I have the mattress padded with two extra sleeping bags for a bit more comfort and friends have often commented on getting a very comfortable night sleep on that bed.
:)

11. I just think that selling it is more of a hassle that it is worth.
The people who would most appreciate and enjoy my stuff are people who are too poor to buy this kind of stuff. So I'd really like to just give it to them. They deserve some good luck. :)

I wonder if the cracks and dampness might be aggravating your health. Mold and mildew and dampness...

13. I'm sure that cracks are the reason the water was able to get in
to flood my bedroom last month. :(

I'll be living in the living room next door, and my nephew will get the bedroom. It's going to be pretty weird for a while. :)

16. I'll be curious to know
if you feel better in a place that's renovated and without old carpet. Millie's going to need lots of extra attention.

I'd give anything to be closer.

18. I have started letting Silver into my room
so that Millie is forced to get used to him. She hates it, but she's adjusting. Like you said, I'm giving her a lot of extra attention.

When we move her next door it's going to be even worse. She's going to need constant comforting all of next weekend. :(

But I'll be there with her so I'll be okay. :)

8. Thom, dude, can I have that 27 foot tv?
I'll split the profit after I sell it to a Premier League footballer.

Seriously, though...the loss of use of your hands, bro?

I extend my deepest thanks (though they'll never see it) to your 14 friends that helped. Well, maybe one will, as I know Rockit was on site.

17. Typo corrected.
:P

If it was really 27 feet I would find some way to get it too you so that you could have it. :)

I have two 27 inch televisions sitting in my living room and I don't watch television. It's a huge waste. I also have two VCRs and 1 DVD player. I accumulated this stuff from former housemates.

Yes, I've lost 70% if the measured strength in my hands as of the last time I was in physical therapy, and my tremors and muscle cramping are getting bad enough now that I'm having trouble holding or handling most small objects.

One of the big reasons I am in an electric wheelchair is because I can't hold onto my crutches for very long even when my feet can support my weight. If I can't hold my crutches then I can't walk.

Typing is fortunately one of the few things I can still do pretty well. But even that is getting very painful, which is one of the reasons why I'm not posting very often anymore.

24. I'm doing my best.
I'm heavily medicated. I've been medicated up to my gills every moment for 2 days so far to get me through this.

Tomorrow I am going to go through a sort of detox to get back down to my normal daily level of painkillers and muscle relaxants and other meds. It'll catch up to me and I'll be tired, but that's okay.

By Wednesday I should be back to normal. :)

31. Hi KC2!

Thank you! This one is going very well. Friends have changed it into a very fun adventure. :)

It would have been a horrible, hideous chore without them. But with them here, it was loud and fun and laughing and good food and jokes and stories and helping each other and all kinds of fun stuff.
