Vitamin Beer

SKU: 22570-x

The Original Vitamin Beer ("The National Drink") was produced by the Kankake Beverage Co., Kankakee, Illinois in 1933. The label notes that the brew contains 46 units of Vitamin "B" and 48 units of vitamin "G"!!

Phil Angelo: Every man's dream, when Kankakee sold Vitamin Beer

You can mark Kankakeeans down as either highly gullible, or way ahead of the times, depending on your view.

A wandering Internet search this summer by Bill Yohnka, executive director of the Kankakee Chamber of Commerce, turned up a photo of a toy railroad car, emblazoned with the slogan "Vitamin Beer." It was proclaimed "The National Drink," bottled by the Kankakee Beverage Company.

We were skeptical. But it turns out that the Kankakee Beverage Company was one of the post-prohibition names for the Radeke Brewery, which was located on the southern end of Dearborn Avenue, just north of the Kankakee River.

The idea was to market beer as "healthy" because it had the right grains. People, of course, soon realized that it was beer, more or less like any other beer.
