My wife, a staunch Republican, is shaking her head over McCain's vicious, ugly campaign, and scratching her head over his choice of the vicious, ugly Sarah Palin for VP.
Mrs. Aristus is a strong, intelligent, good-hearted Goldwater republican. She's firmly anti-choice, but favors strong gun control and opposes the death penalty. And she insists on civility in an arena where there is precious little of it. Yesterday, at lunch with me, my step-daughter and her husband, Mrs. Aristus declared that if that is how McCain campaigns, she doesn't want him to be President. My step-daughter, a product of a conservative Christian upbringing, proudly voted for Kerry in 2004, and she and her husband (who is from rural Georgia!) can't wait until Election Day so they can go out to vote for Obama. I think they understand that their house full of kids deserves a country with a future. A future with President Obama.
Mrs. Aristus and I have tangled over politics for years; although she has always been ashamed of Bush (remember, she appreciates intelligence...) but has still held fairly conservative views on a number of issues. But I think she's had enough. She's tired of having the party she supports led by troglodytes, zombies, shitheads and greedmongers.
The sun is coming up...
