Can Tabasco Sauce get old enough to go "bad"?
I just discovered that I have a small bottlle of it. It was in the cabinet where I store my spices. I have no idea how old it is. It smells all right and the igredients are: vinegar, red pepper and salt. Anybody have any experience with Tabasco sauce going bad?

Being the "frugal" person I am, I'd rather not go out and buy a new bottle.

1. I doubt it
It should be acidic enough to deter any micro organisms from growing in it. Although it might turn more vinegar-y.

2. I just tasted it.
At first, it tasted like vinegar, then it set my mouth on fire. I'll have to break down and buy a new bottle.

3. Try mixing it well.
Possibly there was a separation of layers in it being old..if you mix it well it might be okay...

14. Isn't that what it's supposed to do?
I mean, it IS Tabasco sauce, after all.

5. Yes...it turns brown and loses potency.
Other than that, if it's still the same color...just shake the hell out of it.

6. I swear my mother had some in her cabinet that was 20 years old. She just never used it.
I think it was still hot.

7. I swear my mother had a jar of capers in the cupboard her....
whole adult life. No one ever used them and I know she
moved that jar down the Coast when she moved to California.

8. Mine had a cardboard box of birdseed in the cubboard. We had little moths
in the cubboard all the time. My mom would get me to clean out that cabinet all the time. Empty everything, then clean and put it all back in. Including the birdseed. A few years ago I had an apartment and birdseed and of course moths. I could see the moths walking around in the birdseed so I through it out. Then I thought of my poor mom and her 30 year battle with moths. Poor mom.

16. yeah always freeze birdseed for at least 24-48 hrs
the moths are good protein as far as the birds are concerned but who wants them in your kitchen?

either store the birdseed in a shed outside or freeze it for a few days before defrosting and using

9. I am always scared of stuff going bad. I just don't take any chances.
If it has been a while, I chunk it. I probably waste lots of stuff by doing this, but I can't bring myself to eat anything that is remotely old.

10. Hmmm
I'm guessing you aren't a big wine drinker or a fan of fine aged bleu cheese....:D

12. Nope, I don't drink wine. But doesn't it go bad after opening?
I know it gets better with age, but I thought that was if it was unopened. Bleu cheese tastes like finger nail polish remover smells. Not a fan of old moldy cheese. I do love me some cheese though. Just not old moldy cheese. I am weird, I know.

11. It gets stronger as it ages. If it's sealed, and it looks good, it probably is.
I've used ancient bottles of Tabasco with no ill effects, aside from scorched tongue. Any food can go bad (except honey), so if it's discolored dramatically or smells bad, toss it. It could pick up contaminants if left open, too. But otherwise, it's probably good.

Then again, it's not expensive. Buy a new bottle and remove the concern.

13. It's vinager based, I doubt it will 'go bad' in a traditional sense.
However the flavor could be affected over time. Not sure whether it would be in a good or a bad way though.

15. i don't understand how it could go bad
i keep mine in the fridge but not because i think it will go bad because i have a superstition that i believe weavils like "hot stuff" so i keep it in the fridge

most restaurants here keep it on the table and i've never encountered any that went bad

17. It kind of separates, turns brownish, becomes milder.
Frugal is good, but it's not a lot of money to get a new bottle of hot sauce....
