I'm totally freaked out and shaking
My husband gets direct deposit. His check was NOT THERE today. I have bills set up to pay on payday and our bank account already shows -$300. I was worried about something like this. They've already cut his hours back to 36 a week and I know they are having financial difficulties, but you can't just NOT pay someone who is depending on that money.

I don't know what to do.

2. Thanks for the reassurance
I just called my husband and he's going to call the lady in the office (he works away from the office - Land surveyor) and find out what the heck is going on.

We live check to check. This means no groceries, and there's nothing in the house. I literally use up everything by the time payday rolls around. This means no gas in the car. And on and on and on. My heart is pounding and I'm really scared.

5. Good old survey companies
I did it for 20 years. When the money was short the office people got paid first and we (the field crews) always had to wait because in their opinion we only used our money for drugs and beer anyways.

My post earlier today was about a surveying company I worked at 18 years ago.

3. Does your husband know about it?
If he's at work right now can he find out what is going on? My daughter ran into the problem a while back and it was due to an error on the employer side. Luckily for her it turned out ok because her bank's cut off time for deposits was an hour or two later than her co-workers banks. IIRC, the other people didn't get their deposits until the following Monday.

7. I understand the anxiety.
It's one of the reasons I really detest direct deposit. While it's great when it works, it puts people in awful circumstances if it doesn't.

6. you might want to get a paper paycheck instead of direct deposit
I certainly understand your position. But because banks charge such outrageous fees for bounces, you might want to transition to a cash position. Get a paper paycheck, cash it, pay the bills with money orders so nothing will bounce, and keep the rest of the cash in a safe place to use throughout the month. A bank is like a Vegas casino -- the house always wins.

10. Just talked to my husband
he called the lady in the office and she said she "missed a step" when setting up direct deposit. She's going to talk to "the boss" about what to do to make this right since it was her mistake.

I hope they follow through, we do NOT have the extra money for any NSF fees.

12. One of my husband's work checks bounced and his company
offered to cover any fees that may have been added due to the check bouncing. Luckily, we were covered, but I would hope that your husband's company would pay since it is their fault.

13. I agree with Shell Beau. My daughter's employer did tell
the employees that they would handle any NSF charges since the error was on their part.

14. Link your savings account to your checking
The bank probably has an account like that, where they will automatically transfer money from your savings to your checking, without charging an overdraft fee (or maybe just a smaller fee). That way, you'll never have to worry about an overdraft again, if something like this happens again.

22. She explained that they are living paycheck to paycheck, so linking to "Savings" is sort of
Like linking to the personal Swiss bank account.

In theory it is a wonderful idea, but only if you have the extra money to create such a situation.

15. They came through!
Hubby just called. The Payroll manager just called him and told him that she had someone go down to our bank and deposit his check in cash, just to make sure nothing bounced. I checked online and the money is there.

Whew! I didn't need coffee to wake up this morning! :wow:
