Just got a call, my grandma broke her pelvis and wrist today.
They aren't going to be able to do surgery, they said it'll heal on its own, but it's going to take longer to heal than her broken hip did -- when she broke her hip they just did a complete hip replacement and she was walking in two months.

Apparently she went outside in the wet and decided to start trying to move some dirt over to a place in the yard that's been getting eroded, and slipped.

Mom said they've got her on lots of Demerol (she's allergic to morphine) and they're trying to get her into a room.

I'll probably be driving down there tonight.

1. Wow - sorry to hear it! And what is it with hips? Nancy Reagan broke hers,
and the mother of a friend of mine just broke hers two days ago, and a couple other elderly women I know have broken their hips in the last few months.

Is there some kind of Fall Down Evil Ray Gun out there being used by someone?

I hope your grandma heals up and doesn't have any complications!!

not that i'm any expert on nancy reagan's health but this is so common and i've known so many people this has happened to

this is epidemic among older women, esp. white or thin women after age 80, one of my own grandmothers died this way, my friend's grandmother died this way, and so on

past a certain point the bones are just very fragile, and this is a very very common cause of disability and death in older women

can happen to men too but not as common as their bones don't seem to thin as much

3. Sorry to hear that. I hope they give her some exercises to keep somewhat fit
while somewhat immobilized.
My mom is close to 94 and she broke her hip a few years ago, recovered fairly well except they didn't realize her back had sustained compression fractures in the same fall, so her back healed like a question mark. She was knocked down by an automatic door at the senior center in her town!

4. My mom had a fall last week and broke her wrist. She gets it off this friday.
Seems unbelievable the short amount of time her cast will have been on but apparently that is what they do.

6. I'm so sorry.
I hope your Grandma heals up okay... the broken pelvis will have to be immobilized, no? I wish her good luck and fast healing.
