1. That comment made me cringe
I have two sisters who are teachers. While I think the continuing ed and all is a bit much, the thought of a returning soldier with no teaching experience at all makes no sense. Implies that "anyone can teach. What's the big deal?"

2. And in the context of making sure OTHER teachers are held accountable and certified
That was the real head turner for me.

McCain said something like we have to ensure that our teachers are properly trained, certified, and credentialed. And then in the next sentence he adds that we need to also let returning soldiers go straight into teaching.

And I thought, "Okay - so someone with a degree in education needs to be vetted and certified; but, anyone without a degree in education should just be handed a job."

:wtf:

3. Exactly...
just more McCain-speak. Makes my head hurt. x(

One sister has been out of the classroom for a few years. She can't get her certificate renewed without at least another year of school, possibly more. She's one of the good ones too...

4. I don't think it's supposed to mean "anyone can teach"
I think it's supposed to mean something like "members of the armed services can do anything", and is thus recursive and implies that McCain can do anything (like being president - don't question qualifications, because if you do that, you're comparing him to a constitutional law professor). I'm sure that being in the Army and being a Green Beret taught my dad a lot of skills, but it didn't get him his doctorate in chemistry which got him his job, and a good thing too. He wouldn't have been able to do the job without the knowledge he acquired while pursuing his multiple degrees.

5. Obviously McCain has never faced a classroom full of
disengaged teenagers at 8AM.

"Anybody can teach," yeah, right. Anybody who says that has never taught.
