there was underlining hatred or tension between Palin and Fey as they walked by one another. Or was it part of the skit.

1. No but..
you can watch it here..

http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/gov-palin-cold-open/773761/

I am of course bias.. BUT, I felt it was forced on us. To me it seemed like Palin pushed herself on the show so she could prove to everyone "see? I can be all grown up and laugh too"
I would love to hear the thoughts of the people who had to accommodate her on the show. I couldn't help but notice her constant kitty-butt-faces.

3. Oh, hell. It had its lame bits, like SNL does, especially when
Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin (I almost wrote "Guinness") and Lorne Michaels had to read their bits from cue cards. Other than that, I liked it.

And Palin did magnificently. How is it possible to mess up "Live, from New York, it's Saturday Night?"
