My new water heater
will cost about $3,200.

That's to get a new one and move it to a new location in the house. Oy.

Oh and while he was down there, he told me that my return duct from my HVAC needs replacing. :eyes:

Would someone just shoot me now?

:yoiks:

1. Gas or electric?
And how far does it have to be moved? Are you moving it to a different floor?

4. Electric and 15ft
I want it moved from the kitchen to the utility room, which would be all of about 15 ft.

I don't want gas in my house. Sorry. I know many people use it with no problems, but it gives me the willies. Plus it would be another bill every year.

8. Ok....questions...
Do you know the cost of the heater itself?

$3,200 sounds like an awful lot of money for this. Did you get a few estimates?

Do you know how much is material vs. labor?

9. It's mostly labor
The tank itself is only about $400. But they'd have to drill through a concrete floor and lay new pipe.

11. Ok, so you are on a first floor slab...
and they have to go through that to run the copper. Well, maybe $3,200...but it still sounds high. Hard to tell without knowing the complexity of going through the concrete.

10. Figure $400 for a 40 gallon, and $800 for an 80 gallon...
Let's assume 80 gallon.

$800 for the tank (which is probably high), $200 for Romex and misc electrical materials, $1,000 for labor = high estimate of $2,000.

I need to get two more estimates.

That plumber has done other repair work for me before.

Also, because I'm moving my WH, not just replacing it, I have to get a permit from the county. :P

2. Nope, no shooting.
How about a kiss and a hug? :*

Yeah, I had to pay £1500 for a new water heater when I moved into my apt. That's abotu $2500 in today's money. It'll be about 50 cents by next week. :P

7. Probably a tank
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 12:38 PM by supernova
I don't think I can afford to have an electrician do the extra wiring for a tankless, much as I'd like to have one. The guy giving me the estimate said the power draw would be the equivalent of having 2 more heat pumps. :wow:

edit: And I don't use enough hot water every month to justify that expense.

I'll probably still look for ways to have solar in the future though.

14. I think you can get it done for much less.
Hell, I could spend two full days working on it, charge you far less, and still make very good money. With a helper, for that matter

Find someone cheaper.

16. I see above that they may be re-routing lines thru the concrete?
If so, then it may be reasonable.

18. Yes, the floor in the kitchen
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 01:13 PM by supernova
is wood and the water heater has warped it and will eventually fall through to the crawl space if I don't replace it. The utility room has about a 6-8 inch concrete floor that you can drill through.

Mine is a sort of large galley kitchen with minimal cabinets. I've always wanted to get the water heater out of there to make room for more cabinet space. It would make better sense to put the water heater with the w/d and dishwasher.

20. hmmm, considering those details...
it sounds high, since none of that sounds tooooo time consuming.

Then again, maybe there should be a $1k surcharge tacked on to any job that involves getting into the crawlspace of a house.

I'm still looking around, will try two more plumbers tomorrow.

For now, I'm off to the gym and to find some lunch.

21. I've never heard of a water heater that is that expensive - or do you have
hot water heat?

Yikes!
