I read that a person my weight burns only 100 calories a mile. So my 1.2 miles every day doesn't do much for overall weight loss, does it?

1. trying running that same mile doing intervals
you'll burn more calories

so... run really hard for 90 seconds... then cool back down for 90 seconds..... and so on....

2. I think the benefit comes from raising your overall metabolism.
I think it's not just the calories burned during exercise.

Your body will continue to burn calories at a higher rate throughout the day after running.

But, I'm not a professor of biosciencedoctorology.

4. There are a LOT of variables...
100 per mile might be about right, though.

I concur with MissMillie about the intervals. You can do intervals by time, or distance- or what I do, which is with a heart rate monitor. I'll sprint right up to my maximum HR, then back down and recover into the 60% max rate and repeat...

5. That's THE best way for me to keep my weight down -- it melts off me
Even at 43, and even only doing two or three miles a day.

An erg is great, too, but not as interesting.

Running is also cheap.

7. exercise as a whole doesn't really burn many calories for the most part
you have to do it for other reasons or, in the case of running, i would frankly not do it all because of the cumulative damage to one's joints
