How long after you break your ankle does it get back to normal?
I broke mine on Memorial Day, shattered it as a matter of fact and dislocated it to boot. I have a metal rod and 20 screws in it. I still limp if I over extend it and the swelling has not ever gone down. I can walk without a limp sometimes and wear normal shoes but damn, I'm ready for this pain and swelling to be gone.

1. Turns out I had a stress fracture back in April
I didn't find out about it until I went to a different podiatrist in August. The fracture was just above the ankle thingie sticking out on the outside of my foot. I ran a marathon in May-with the break.

I am right now wearing a Bone Growth Stimulator (yes the jokes write themselves) even though it is completely healed. I have to go back to the pod in November

It depends on the break, kind of break, and how much you can immobilize it.

3. I have one of those tie, velcro wrap supports I wear all the time
a lot of football teams have gone to them. They are great-makes my ankle feel stronger than it ever was.

6. It could take a long time
did you have sprains as well?

They take longer. I sprained my ankle really bad 30 years ago, and if I step on it a certain way, I remember it vividly.

Sorry for the bad news

7. my best friend broke his ankle and had to do the rod and screw thing too...
he also twisted his other ankle at the same time. Very graceful that one. ;)

I think it took him a good 6 months after surgery for his ankle to feel normal again. It's hard to keep the swelling down when you have to walk on it. I'm IMing him right now to ask. If I'm wrong, I'll edit this post with his answer.

Sorry to hear about the shattered ankle. :(

8. ON EDIT....
Edited on Sat Oct-25-08 10:09 PM by GloriaSmith
OUCH. Ok, so my friend broke his ankle on May 4th, 2007 and apparently it is still bothering him. If he's on his feet a lot, his scar begins to itch and his ankle begins to swell a little.

:(

on edit: my friend wanted me to mention that it took about 10 months for him to walk on it without thinking about it.
