Anyone want a darling golden retriever / golden lab mix? My neighbors are idiots

Gus is an extremely sweet dog, well - I guess he's still a puppy - looks mostly full grown but I don't think he's much more than 6 months old.

Anyway. Neighbors have a son in grade school, and a new baby. Decided it would be neato-keen for grade-school son to have a puppy; now they all completely ignore Gus and the kid is at school all the time and just too young to train the dog; the parents don't care or can't be bothered. And since we're in rural hick-ville, they let Gus run loose all day, and all night. I've taught him to sit, and bought him a new collar when they left the puppy one on and it had gotten too damn tight. But he's driving me crazy, over here all the time, pissing on everything, tearing the downstairs porch apart, freaking out the indoor/outdoor cat, scaring away the ferals I've cared for (and have been trying to catch to get them neutered). I love animals, but I am just not equipped to deal with a puppy now; I don't want a dog, but seems the neighbors don't, either. Because they can't be bothered, he's become my problem, because I actually care about Gus' well-being.

The neighbors are nice enough - just stupid. If I could find Gus a good home, they'd probably let me give him away. Any takers?

Sigh. I know no one probably will take him, just had to vent. STOOOOOPID PEOPLE! Why get a puppy you're not going to bother to train or love?

1. Wife and I have 4 cats, 3 of whom adopted US.
And we're such suckers for the damn furballs that it's nearly impossible not to end up adding to our feline army almost every time we find another stray.

It sucks, doesn't it? :(

2. we have 7. I love them all, but they have really, really
complicated our lives. For the ferals, I just have to steel myself that they'll be OK on their own; they lived well before I arrived and will be OK when we leave. But it breaks my heart.

3. Go to Petfinder.com
type in your zip code. You'll get a list of nearby rescues. Call a few, and see if any of them have space for him. If the neighbors won't care for him, and you think they'd let you rehome him, then do so.

4. yeah, I should do that. I'm in total shitsville, though, when it comes
to good rescues -- the closest decent ones are in Asheville, about 1.5 hours away. I'll check around, though, and see what I can find.

5. Such a pity. The Lab/Golden hybrids are some sweet dogs!
I guess it's the Golden Retriever part that makes them prone to roam. They just have to "run and find out" about everything, which can lead to them getting shot by pinheads out in the sticks. I speak from bitter experience on that last point.

Pure-dee Labradors will take up every moment that you can spare them, but the hybrids (I call 'em RetrieveAdors) REALLY need time and attention. Gus needs to be placed with a Human who has no life, as his new owner will get one very soon!
