Need advice on LCD TV's. I am looking for a 26" What brands
should I look for, and what brands should I avoid?

I'm retired so going bigger is out of the que$tion. Anyway, much bigger would be too big for our room.

TKS

BTW, off topic, and on topic, it makes little difference. The conversation is what is important. An answer will come eventually.

Damn, this Honey Vanilla Chamomile tea is good.

1. Don't totally limit yourself
Don't be so sure, Costco has a 32" LCD for $399, that's about as much as a 26

4. No Costco in my area. There's one about eighty miles from here.
They sell Samsung and Sharp. Those are brands I know.

7. Samsung is good.
My Dad's LCD tv is one of theirs and it's a good one- stunning, beautiful picture. It went out on him and the local service techs Samsung sent out were really slow and their service was horrible, but Samsung did right by him, set up service with a better company, and totally replaced the TV since he'd waited so long.

8. I owned a Samsung film camera. It was solid. I know that Apple was or
still is a partner/part owner.

I've seen a few reviews and they seem to get good reviews across the board, maybe not up to Sony or Sharp but look good for the price.

25. I'll second the Aquos.
We've got two - upstairs and downstairs. One is 18 months old, the other almost a year, and they've been great.

5. Depends on your price range.
I got a 32 inch Samsung for 700 bucks about 4 months ago, and hell if the thing isn't 640 now. HHgregg.com also has a sony the same size for 640.

From my research before buying mine, the consensus seems to be that Sony has the best LCD's, Followed by Samsung.

If you can wait a while until black friday, you can get a lot of the deals online, and save a boat of cash. I got a little 19 inch sharp for 250 last year on Black Friday off the internet, and you don't have to wait in line.

13. Thanks, that's a good resource. My old Mac G4 was a refurb. It's still
running after eight years. It is now doing duty at the local Dem headquarters.

10. Well I don't know about brands but I will tell you this.
At 26", don't worry about what resolution the TV maxes out at. Whether it's 1080p or not, doesn't matter. At that size, 1080p will look the same as 720p. Don't let the salesman talk you into wasting more money for something you won't even notice.

great value for the price, and priced right at Target.

12. I had a friend who did not feel the need for a stereo because he could
only hear out of one ear. My eyes are not as young as they used to be, so I don't think I could even tell the difference between 1080p or 720p. I will apply the wisdom of my one eared friend and buy a 720p.

14. I went with a Toshiba
It's a little cheaper than the Sharp Aquos -- and, in my opinion, has a better picture.

I was debating over my decision too; I found the best thing to do was just to go to an electronics store and check out all the display TVs. I didn't look at price or brand at first. Just decided which TVs had the best picture and then went from there.

15. Do you really need a television, or will a monitor do? If you have cable or DirecTV, you don't need
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 01:49 PM by 1Hippiechick
a full-blown television--just a receiver. Our smaller t.v. is actually a HD receiver. Our larger one is actually a SONY Bravia - went into a sunroom where before we could not watch t.v. during the day. This one is like being at the movies. If anything, the screen is so large that at night it almost feels like a strobe light flashing - I don't like that part. The pix is unreal.

As far as pricing, check Sears, of all places. They will match or beat competitors prices on everything. We ultimately went with BestBuy because they offered the better deal on the receivers for DirecTV.

Edited to add: By the way, we have always had RCA televisions and never had a moment's problem with them. We DID do a lot of investigating, though, and ended up with the SONY, and I truthfully am not a huge SONY fan.

cable box then to the monitor?

they want to sell the much more expensive televisions? Our monitor looks exactly like a television - the smaller one is an RCA TruFlat HD monitor that we bought at WalMart. Maybe the monitors only are not available in LCD?

26. I'm seeing little difference between the price of monitors and LCD TV's,
and then factoring in any needed hardware, it might be more expensive.

I've converted my small TV for DTV. I made my own antenna. It's ugly but it works.

17. That's what I have.
Not an LCD though, a rear projection HD set. For the bigger screens (and mine is embarrassingly big, but I got it insanely cheap on sale and it makes reading the captions easier) they're a much better deal.

21. we were limited to a 40 inch one because of space
we chose the Sony Bravia KDL 40

still learning how to navigate it and we need our cable company to get us a newer digital box so we can hook up the fancy HDMI cable

pleased so far but it took us almost 3 hours to hook it up right :eyes:

27. We're sitting 5-7 feet from the screen, and the space for the set is
limited. I think a 26 is the right size.

24. We have Panasonic LCD (32") and just hooked it up to HDTV for first
time through Time Warner. We've been very happy with it--not on HDTV--as well as now. Been using it for a year, but bought it Nov 2006. Long story--it was in storage--and when our house burned down all the furniture that was in storage for another place we took out to use immediately.

I bought through Amazon two years ago--beat everybody's local store prices. No problems
with the TV.
